Safety Salamander was the safety mascot for Springfield Elementary School. Homer assumed the identity of the Safety Salamander.

After disappointing and upsetting Lisa yet again, she started to act up at school. This led to Homer and Marge being called in to talk to Principal Skinner about her behavior. Dr. J. Loren Pryor said that Homer's actions were leading to Lisa disliking men and he and Principal Skinner told Homer that he had to become a positive role model to Lisa to stop this from happening. Skinner then recommended that Homer becomes the Safety Salamander in an attempt for Homer to restore faith in him and men.

Homer's attempts at being the Safety Salamander get off to a rocky start. After finding that there's no seat belts on the school bus, he gets Otto to stop the bus suddenly, causing all the children to hurt themselves. When he gave a presentation at the school, he activated fireworks on a sign that says "Safety", which set fire to the school gymnasium. Homer's suit then got stuck in the door, trapping everyone inside until Homer collapsed to the floor. This led to Lisa becoming even more disillusioned with Homer...
