Pop! Goes the Career is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #173.

Plot

Lisa is practicing for the school talent show. Marge tells her that she's good, Homer does not care, and Bart thinks that she is lousy. The next day, Sherri and Terri show off a Malibu Stacy Wig which they received as a birthday present. The girls in the schoolyard are impressed, so Bart steals the wig and begins to sing and dance like a girl. The girls are mad at Bart, but the boys love Bart. Antonio Vabosco sees that the children are enthralled with Bart, and goes to talk to Bart. Vabosco tells him that he will make him a star. Bart tells Antonio that he ca not dance or sing, but Antonio says that that's no problem. But when Bart tells him that he's really a boy, he realizes that there is a problem. He forces all students to sign a contract that forbids them to tell people that Bart is not a girl. "Tori" starts her new career as a musician and Milhouse becomes her closest friend in her new career. Antonio drives to Homer and Marge to tell them what he wants to do with Bart/Tori. While Bart is tempted by the fame and money, the though of being made to live as a feminine teen girl is a nasty one for him, and Marge is 100% against the entire thing. Homer, however, signs it, making it legally binding.

Immediately after the contract is signed, Tori s placed on an airplane and flies to the recording studio where they write her songs, record songs for CDs and make music videos. Tori Missouri's first public appearance is on The Krusty the Clown Show, singing a typically inane song while clad in a white jumpsuit and love-heart belt and everyone in the audience loves her. Then Tori goes on a three-week twelve-city tour.

Tori Missouri is soon to appear in Springfield and the kids in Springfield are thrilled. Lisa tries to tell them that Tori Missouri is a big fake, but they won't listen to her. Meanwhile, Tori begins to have problems. She begins to eat a lot and gains weight. She can't stand up and is forced to go on a diet, but ignores it and continues eating.

Tori Missouri performs in the Springfield Founders Day Parade, but has trouble dancing because she is so fat. Her skirt and crop top barely fit, and she breaks the stage. She drops out of the car and starts to run away from the fans who start chasing her, and ends up losing her wig. Bart gets fired and Antonio sends him home. They have given him more fitting clothes, but for unmentioned reasons it's still a frilly pink dress despite him not disguised as girl any longer. Antonio is angry now; he must find a new job. The chauffeur, Kirk, tells him that you can turn anyone into a star. He sees Milhouse sitting in the car, but he throws him out and tells Kirk that even Vabosco has limits. Milhouse is forced to return to his pathetic existence, but tell his father he finds comfort in fact he once knew somebody mildly famous. Kirk blankly asks him if this really makes their lives any more meaningful, to which Milhouse sadly replies in the negative.
