Book Information

Sane Planning, Sensible Tomorrow is a book by Vice President Al Gore. Lisa bought a copy at Books! Books! And Additional Books!.
History
After the Simpson family finished their shopping at Books! Books! And Additional Books!, they took their purchases to the cash register. Lisa held up her copy of Sane Planning, Sensible Tomorrow and said she hoped it was "as exciting as [Gore's] other book, Rational Thinking, Reasonable Future". Bart said he was getting a book on UFOs (Unidentified Flying Outrage!), and said, "Did you know they're real, but there's a huge government conspiracy to cover it up?"
Lisa pooh-poohed Bart's remark, dismissing it as "just a paranoid fantasy". But when the bookstore clerk scanned Sane Planning, Sensible Tomorrow at the register, an electronic signal traveled down some wires, to a satellite dish, up to a satellite, back down to Earth, and finally to The Pentagon. At The Pentagon, the signal activated a printer and a page printed out. A man in uniform took the page, ran to Vice President Gore's office, and told him that someone had finally bought a copy of his book. To celebrate, Gore put on an LP record and played the song "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang.
Behind the Laughter
- The fictional books Rational Thinking, Reasonable Future and Sane Planning, Sensible Tomorrow are tongue-in-cheek references to Al Gore's real-life 1992 book, Earth in the Balance.
- The music that plays in the background as the signal travels from the bookstore to The Pentagon is strongly reminiscient of the X-Files theme.
