Poolin' Around is a The Simpsons Summer Shindig comic story first printed in The Simpsons Summer Shindig #8.
Synopsis
Due to the city's budget cuts, Homer and the Simpsons clan are recruited as the lifeguards at the municipal pool.
Plot
Homer jumps off the diving board at Springfield Community Pool, splashing Mayor Quimby and his checks as he makes a speech there. When Quimby finds out it was Homer who ruined his checks, he decides to punish Springfield by canceling the budget for the pool, which upsets the other inhabitants. Lisa has an idea: the family should take care of the pool during the summer, so Homer and Marge become lifeguards. Homer decides that the pool should have sand for "that 'beach' atmosphere", but it attracts cats, who use it as a litter box. The residents of Springfield come to the pool and start swimming. Marge rescues Jimbo from drowning in the pool while Homer tries out his new amphibian wheelchair. The kids in Springfield are on an inflatable lilo when a cat jumps on and destroys it, and it starts to sink. Homer drives his wheelchair into the water to save them. He drowns, but he floats up and the children are rescued by Homer's fat body. The family then hires real lifeguards because Homer has received money by promising the manufacturer of the wheel chair that he will not tell anyone that he uses their products.
