Better Off Ned is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #181.
Synopsis[edit]
After Ned has another psychotic breakdown, he takes a vacation and goes on a cruise. Rod and Todd stay with the Simpson family. On the boat Ned becomes good friends with a woman called Tracy but when the boat sinks it is assumed that he and Tracy is dead and Rod and Todd's distant relatives are their new step-parents.
Plot[edit]
Ned finally loses his temper with Homer for "borrowing" another one of his leaf blowers. When Marge sees him chasing Homer with a chainsaw, she invites Ned inside and offers him a vacation on a Cloud Nine cruise ship. While on the cruise, he becomes friendly with a woman named Tracy, while Homer and Marge take custody of Rod and Todd. However, a whale being chased by The Sea Captain sinks the boat Ned is on, leaving him and Tracy stranded in the middle of the ocean. The whale eventually returns and brings them ashore on a deserted island.
Meanwhile, Channel 6 News reports that Ned and Tracy are dead. Homer breaks the news to Rod and Todd in an insensitive manner. Shortly afterward, a man named Stu and his wife, Matilda, arrive, claiming to be blood relatives of the Flanders family. They take custody of the children, much to Homer's delight.
Back on the island, Tracy tries to get romantic with a reluctant Ned, who instead focuses on building shelters for them. That evening, when Tracy makes another attempt to convince him of her love, Ned refuses and runs to another part of the island. Meanwhile, in Springfield, Matilda and Stu's house becomes a chaotic mess, filled with partying neighbors, loud music, and supplies of Duff beer. They force Rod and Todd to wash their car. Marge asks Homer to get them to turn the music down, which he agrees to do, but he ends up singing along with everyone instead.
While Ned builds a church out of wood on the island, Lisa uncovers information about Rod and Todd's new guardians. It turns out Matilda has a criminal record and only a distant connection to the Flanders family—she was once married to Ned's second cousin, Abner.
Back on the island, a film crew, including film star Rainier Wolfcastle, lands near Ned and Tracy. Tracy hatches a plan to make Ned feel guilty by leaving a goodbye note and disappearing into the jungle, expecting Ned to come rescue her. Instead, the first being to find her is an alien. When Ned hears her scream, he comes to save her and knocks the head off the "alien," revealing it to be an actor in a costume. Rainier arrives and sees Tracy, who he is unhappy to encounter. Ned is surprised to learn that Tracy and Rainier are married, but Rainier reveals he has a new wife named Citronella Marpoza. When Citronella and Tracy begin fighting, the film crew changes the movie to incorporate their altercation as a new third act.
Back in Springfield, Bart uses a voice adulterizer to trick Matilda into thinking she has won a hundred million dollars. She and Stu rush to Capitol City with their ticket stubs, leaving Rod and Todd alone. Ned returns just in time to reunite with his sons and resume his role as their father.
