Yellow Crush is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #86.
Synopsis[edit]
- Bart discovers that Grampa was a surfing stunt double in films when he was younger and enters a surfing contest with Grampa's help.
Plot[edit]
At the Aztec Theater, a trailer for the new McBain film Nerd Puncher III: Rise of the Geekbeater! shows. After the trailer, the Squeaky-Voiced Teen kicks everybody out because they no longer have time to show the actual film. As Bart and Milhouse leave, they see that the Aztec Theater is soon going to be replaced with a new 100-screen theater, The Centenneplex. That night, the Simpson family discusses the demolition of the Aztec Theater. They decide to do something for it, and Lisa goes to Kent Brockman after talking the city council into holding a festival of the Aztec Theater's most successful films from the last sixty years so Brockman can announce it on Channel 6 News.
Soon, the film festival starts, and the film Beach Blanket Boondoggle shows. During the film, Bart notices that the surfer looks like Grampa. Later, Bart goes to visit Grampa at the Retirement Castle to talk to him about his stunt double days. Grampa explains that after World War II, getting a job was hard. One day, he was selling blood at the beach, where Beach Blanket Boondoggle was being filmed. Frankie Adonis didn't want to get his hair wet. Grampa was approached about serving as the stunt double instead, which he agreed to do. Grampa then went on to double in twenty-four films. Bart becomes excited about this and asks Grampa to teach him how to surf.
At the beach, Grampa starts Bart's surfing lessons. The school bullies show up and mock Bart before telling him that they need to practice for the Young Offenders Surf-Off Competition and tell Bart to stay out of the ocean. Bart decides to enter and win the competition, which makes the bullies laugh. Meanwhile, at the Hong Kong Butterfly Detention Facility, a worker in Sector 7-G falls asleep and a butterfly gets free. Professor Frink tells the workers there that this will cause a butterfly effect that will cause an incredible climate change on the other side of the planet.
The next day, Captain McCallister is on his boat when he gets swept up by a tidal wave. Meanwhile, Bart tries to enter the surf-off competition, but isn't allowed because he doesn't have a criminal record. So, Bart pulls some minor crimes to get the rap sheet he needs to enter. Grampa gives Bart a new surfboard, which is actually a slide. Off the coast, Gil has finished paying off his houseboat when a tidal wave sweeps him up, leaving him on the same island Captain McCallister ended up on. On the beach, the surf-off competition gets ready to start. Frink tries to get back to Springfield to warn everybody, but he ends up in Australia instead. The surf-off starts and Bart is knocked into the sand by the bullies. As Bart runs to the sea, Frink arrives on the Springfield beach and tells everyone that a tsunami will wipe out Springfield. As everybody panics, Bart decides to try and win the surf-off still and heads out onto the waves. Grampa follows, taking a bundle of experimental high-density evaporation grenades from Frink to try and disperse the tsunami. As Grampa and Bart surf together, Grampa has Bart throw the grenades into the crest of the wave. This causes the tsunami to go over the top of Springfield, sweeping The Centenneplex into the ocean. With Springfield saved, Bart is made the winner of the surf-off, and Bart offers to teach Grampa how to skateboard.
Much, much later, Captain McCallister and Gil were still stranded on the island. The Centenneplex floats by them, which the two of them enter to watch Cast Away 2: Gilligan's Revenge to stave off their boredom.
