If You Could See What I Smell is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #231.

Synopsis[edit]

"Lisa develops synaesthesia, which enables her to acquire detailed information and impressions through her sense of smell, and it doesn't take long for her to stick her nose in everyone's business"

Plot[edit]

Springfield Elementary School's Junior Scientist Society is holding a model rocket competition, where the grand prize is a dinner with Professor Frink and Rocky Galileo. Lisa is the first student to launch her rocket, but when she does, it explodes. Lisa develops synaesthesia, and after a quick examination by Professor Frink, he realizes that she sees what she smells. This causes Principal Skinner to disband the society, but Lisa gets him to change his mind if they find the culprit. Lisa asks Martin Prince, but she realizes it's not him after he tells her he was reading alone before the rocket was fired. Lisa goes into the school cafeteria, but cannot stand the sight of all the food because she sees all of the animals and chemicals from which the food is made. Lisa goes to ask Sherri and Terri, who are cleaning Sir Stinky's cage, but they tell her that they were busy with their own rocket. Bart advises Lisa to look at the camcorder, which Coach Krupt used to film the kickball team practicing on the playground before the launch. Lisa doesn't want to go to the gym because of the smell of the clothes in the changing rooms, but she finds air fresheners to block the smell. Unfortunately, however, she is too late because someone took the camera. Lisa chases the thief, but hits Ralph, who smells cats, glue and cotton candy. He says that he knows what made her rocket explode. Ralph and the rest of the society gather in the principal's office and Ralph tells them that it was one of the twins who did it, but he does not know which one. Skinner cannot punish both twins for something only one of them did. Lisa smells their hands, and she sees that Sherri has the same smell as her rocket. She did not notice it before, because she had gloves on. Skinner says that he needs proof. Nelson comes and asks Sherri if the firecracker she bought from him worked. Skinner hears this and catches her. Lisa wins the prize because she saved the club, and gets to eat dinner with Frink and Rocky. Frink tells her that the side effect will disappear soon, but Lisa tells him there is no hurry after she sees that Rocky smells waterfalls and rainbows.
