Fund-Razing is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #76.

Synopsis[edit]

Bart and Lisa must resort to sabotage when their classmates are misled into believing that there's easy money to be had in their most recent school fundraiser.

Plot[edit]

Gil gives a presentation to the students of Springfield Elementary School about how they should raise money for school this year. Gil tells the students that they are going to sell Nutty Fun Time Peanut Brittle and that the best sellers will receive prizes depending on how much they sell. For selling five boxes, they get Scratch-and-Sniff stickers; for ten boxes, a stick that doesn't smell. For twenty boxes they get a glossy 8x10 photograph signed by Marvin Kalb, and for fifty boxes, ten thousand dollars in cash. The last one is said by Bart, not Gil. Gil tries to explain that he did not say it, but the students do not listen to him and become eager to sell the boxes. The students begin to fight over who sold the most boxes, and Bart is happy with what he's done. Outside of the school, Gil is crying because he cannot afford the $10,000; he planned to give a subscription to Amish Surfers magazine. Lisa discovers that Gil is sad and understands that Bart is behind the rumor.

Lisa tries to help Bart understand that he must help her stop the kids from selling 50 boxes, but he refuses until she points out that they have to destroy a lot of stuff to handle the task. Bart begins to stop Martin from selling a package to Ned by knocking him out with his slingshot, then jumps on the boxes. He then wets down Sherri and Terri and their boxes. Lisa gets Moe to not buy cakes from Milhouse by telling him that they contain organic legumes. Lisa sees that the school bullies are also trying to sell boxes and tries to stop them, but fails. Sherri, Terri and Martin tell the bullies what the Simpsons have done for them. Bart runs to them and explains that if they manage to sell all the cookies, school will be open for six days and remove summer vacation. The rumor begins to spread, and all the students begin destroying their boxes and littering all over Springfield. This sale is over after a few days and it turns out to be the worst sale ever. Principal Skinner is not happy with Gil because he failed. Meanwhile, the students are forced to clean up the debris across the city.
