Fund-Razing is a Bart Simpson comic story first printed in Bart Simpson #76.
Synopsis[edit]
- Bart's attempt to get a fundraising assembly over with quickly backfires on him when Lisa makes him help save Gil from bankruptcy. However, when Lisa wants Bart to cause havoc and destruction, he's quick to help.
Plot[edit]
The students at Springfield Elementary make their way to the school gym for a fundraising assembly. Lisa is annoyed as it's the eleventh fundraising assembly of the year, and Nelson mentions wanting to get out of it. Bart comes up with an idea to liven things up and quickly heads off to put his plan into action. As Gil Gunderson gives the presentation to the kids, telling them that they'll be selling peanut brittle to the people of Springfield, Bart plugs a second microphone into the speaker system. As Gil reads out the prizes that the children could get for selling the peanut brittle, Bart adds that the best prize is ten thousand dollars in cash for selling fifty boxes. This excites the kids, who storm the stage to grab boxes of peanut brittle to sell, despite Gil stammering that he never said that last thing. Superintendent Chalmers decides to let this happen as he's never seen the kids so excited for a fundraising drive.
The kids pour out of the school and go to sell peanut brittle. However, Lisa notices that Gil is sad because he can't afford ten thousand dollars. Lisa tells Bart that he should be ashamed of himself, but Bart doesn't care that he's ruined Gil's life. Lisa then shouts at Gil for getting kids to guilt people into buying overpriced, second-rate products, but Gil says that he only took the job because his aunt is in an iron lung and the roof leaked at the old folks' home, causing it to rust. Lisa asks Bart to help make sure nobody can win the ten thousand dollars. Bart is uninterested in helping until Lisa points out that it'll involve creating havoc and mass destruction, so he quickly changes his tune and agrees to help.
Bart and Lisa go around Springfield stopping the sale of peanut brittle to the residents, most often by destroying the goods in front of the other kids. Eventually, Bart and Lisa see the bullies pressure-selling to senior citizens. Bart tells Lisa that he won't help because he doesn't want to receive a beating from the bullies, but Lisa decides to take matters into her own hands and destroys the boxes of peanut brittle the bullies were selling. Before they can do anything to Lisa, Bart comes to his sister's rescue and tells the bullies and the other kids that the money made from selling the peanut brittle will go toward a secret plan to extend the school week to six days with no summer vacations. This news spreads among all the kids, who destroy all the peanut brittle they were selling.
Back at school, Principal Skinner is annoyed at having their worst fundraiser ever, only selling five dollars' worth of peanut brittle to his mother. However, Superintendent Chalmers works out a deal with Mayor Quimby to raise money by putting the kids to work cleaning the streets of Springfield. Nelson blames Bart for the outcome, but Bart says that they were the ones who wanted out of the assembly in the first place.
