Basketball's a Drag is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #78.
Synopsis[edit]
- The Springfield Elementary girl's basketball team is headed for the city championship until it's star player, Lisa Simpson, gets injured. How far will Principal Skinner go to beat the team from Shelbyville?
Plot[edit]
Budget cuts force Groundskeeper Willie to cut one player from the boys' basketball team. Even though he is one of the better players, Bart gets cut. Milhouse feels sorry for Bart and says that it's a shame he's not a girl, since their team needs more players. Lisa is one of the players on the school's girls' team, and when she sprains her metacarpal and is forced to stop playing for four to six weeks, Bart gets an idea for how he can join the girls' team. Lisa is looking for a replacement but cannot find one, and Springfield is only one game away from the final against Shelbyville. Bart tells Lisa and Principal Skinner that he can replace Lisa. After Bart puts on a wig representing Lisa's hair, Skinner believes that it can work, but Lisa thinks it is cheating. Lisa tells Bart these situations never work out well, but after Bart puts on Lisa's basketball uniform, she thinks he makes a convincing girl.
The next day at school, Bart is with the girls' team as Lisa and Ms. Pommelhorst celebrate him after training, but his teammates tell Bart that they know it's him and that he is only with them so they can win. They say he may be a good player, but it's not fun for them. Bart tells them that sports are about winning. The final game of the season then comes around, and Pommelhorst puts "Lisa" in offense to the girls' disappointment, as they can hardly do anything when he is on the court. Much to their surprise, Bart gets sweaty and loses the wig when he tries to wipe away the sweat and becomes exposed. Shelbyville wins after Springfield is disqualified for having a boy on the girls' team, leading Superintendent Chalmers to punish both Skinner and Bart by making them join the boys' basketball team as towel boys.
