Cultural References

The Untitled Robot Parody is a parody of the Transformers franchise from Hasbro. The toy that blinked it's lights at Bart in the 99cent store resembles the original Optimus Prime cab-over Semi of the Transformers cartoon from 1984. Homer and Ned's cars transform into robots resembling Optimus Prime and Megatron. Bestimus Mucho is a reference to Optimus (Best) Prime(foremost) whose name is intended to convey "best of the best". Homer kills several celebrities, including Prince and George Clooney. The beginning of "How to Get Ahead in Dead-Vertising" is a parody of Mad Men.[8] Edward G. Robinson appears in the same outfit he wore in Little Caesar to confront Chief Wiggum for "stealing his act." Milhouse' prayer to the Grand Pumpkin is similar to the Nicene Creed. The dance scene in "It's the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse" is a parody of the dance scene in A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Trivia

  • Alternate titles for "Untitled Robot Parody" include: Morf Transers, Trans Morfers, and Snort Farmers.
  • All the characters shown in the title sequence of "How to Get Ahead in Dead-Vertising" are: Marge, Patty, Selma, Edna, Grampa, Mona, Homer, Lurleen Lumpkin, Ruth Powers, Maggie, Rod, Ned, Maude, Todd, Medicine Woman(from The Simpsons Movie), Spiderpig, Lisa, Agnes Skinner, and Amber(from "Viva Ned Flanders") and Lindsay Neagle.

Notes

  • Kang and Kodos, who are seen regularly in the Treehouse of Horror specials, only have a non-speaking cameo appearance in "It's the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse". They're only in the scene where they're dancing like the Peanuts gang with several of the children.
  • A controversy occured with the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) over this episode when Nelson Muntz stated that the Grand Pumpkin is "super gay." A spokesperson for the GLSEN said "many people say gay without even realizing what they're saying is bad, we're trying to educate people that this is a term that is hurtful to young people when used in a negative way." There have been various homosexual related jokes throughout the series, but have never caused controversy.
