== Community discussion ==
 +
OK, I really think we should have one of these like every four months or so. No need everyone going off and doing their own thing; we all need to be on one accord.

 +
This is not intended to be a long rant by me. This is me opening up the discussion to the ENTIRE community on their concerns or ways to improve the wiki. So I’ll start…

 +
First, an idea I have: Just because we’re an encyclopedia, doesn’t mean we have to look like one. We look dull. Is it any wonder why new editors never stay around, which is why I admire those that do month after month.

==Featured Articles/Images/Episode ==
+
What am I saying? Let’s spruce the place up. I was hoping that when we moved over to Shout, we would makes ourselves look vastly cooler than Wikia. Instead, it’s the same old same old.
Any ideas for the article and episode? I am going to upload the new Simpsons opening image for the pciture.

Also i''m going to make a record of previous featured articles/images/episodes somewhere.''

== Language Links ==

Whatever the case, my idea was this: Adding a poll, to be directly located under the infobox, to every episode article, allowing users to rate the episode. Remember, we’re fans of the show, first and foremost, and I for one would like to know what other fans think. Here’s an example:

Here's a copy of what a posted on every Simpson wiki for reference.
+

Rate “Who Shot Grampa’s Hat”.

B (Very Good)

C (OK)

D (D'oh!)

E (Worst. Episode. Ever.)

Hi(i used google to translate this in case you can't understand English)
+
Then, each month, when we do the Featured Episode, we could display the average user rating (the one with the most votes), like so:
I'm from the English Simpsons wiki and i'm going to update our language links tonight and over the weekend. One question though, does it update your Homer page if i put it on the English page?--Sgtcook 21:45, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

About the Language links... I think that they're a [http://fr.simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Accueil wiki in french], the admins can adds this links please? I can't because i'm not an admin. Thanks. Sincerely.

We don’t have to use the parenthetical info, I was just playing around. I don’t know if it’s possible, but we can make the poll signed–in users only, so it’s more legit.

Is someone spamming that or is that intended to be there, i have the feeling its not supposed to.

Anyway, that was my idea. Now on to the more important matters. We gon’ nip all this s**t in the bud, TODAY! Just kidding, anyways…

Behind the Laughter. Originally, it irked me, the ‘L’ being capitalized. Unless it is a proper noun or the first word in the heading, it should be lowercase. But now it doesn’t much bother me. AS LONG as it just with ''that'' heading, and nothing else. However, we still need to reach a consensus as a community on whether it should be lowercase or uppercase.

== About This Wiki The Simpsons Page ==
+
I was on Wikisimpsons Forum, and saw a discussion about guestimating ages, etc. I completely agree. My general rule is that, unless it’s given in the show, don’t use it. If a character doesn’t have a last name, don’t make on up—even if they are married. What’s the point of being an encyclopedia if we’re not going to be accurate? We can call her Gloria Jailbird all we want to—until it’s stated as such in an episode (or one of ''The Simpsons: A Complete Guide'' books), the character is still officially just known as “Gloria”. Take Herbert Powell. If his last name had never been revealed, we’d have countless editors saying it’s “Simpson”. If a character’s age or birthdate is not given, don’t guess one. Just leave it blank. Only if a character says they’re in their 50s, or such, should we be putting that down.

This Alex Estrada, this page should be edited with a little more heart and soul, meaning there needs to be more info on every page, and most importantly, on the home page.
+
Next, prose. Past or present, in–universe or out –of–universe is the question. Although, as I had expressed at one point, past sounds more professional, what I don’t like is how often, are articles come off as sounding like historical accounts: “once”, “at one point”, etc. Past tense is fine for out–of–universe, but ''in–universe and past tense don’t mix'' (Wikipedia has a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(writing_about_fiction) list of the problems] with this, by the way - ''see "The problem with in-universe perspective"''), which is why I had suggested switching to out–of–universe. But, as Brian McClure once said, no sense trying to compete with Wikipedia, so I agree we should stay with in–universe. I will just suggest that our articles be written in present tense. Again, I use [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:TENSE#Tense Wikipedia’s reasoning] as to why.

Thanks, for anyone who read this all the way.--[[User:Novatv456|Novatv456]] 23:35, 29 July 2009 (UTC)--[[User:Novatv456|Novatv456]] 23:35, 29 July 2009 (UTC)--[[User:Novatv456|Novatv456]] 23:35, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
+
Brian also suggested using in–paragraph citations like Lostpedia does, which I think is a great idea as you would have the reference right there and, again, it’s just one more thing we can do so we don’t look like your average, bland wiki encyclopedia, with a list of references at the bottom of every article.

== Video games pic? ==

OK, there's [[Template:Ep]], which is used for the TV show in the Appearances box for characters (i've revamped Homers). There's also Bon (for comics) and UL (for the Tracy Ullman shorts). Where's the one for Video Games? Does it still need to be made, and if so, what picture would suit it? Are there any other catagories for appearances (the templates aren't in a group)?

+
:The Poll idea could be a good way to get people more involved, though its quite hard to make us look different to others wikis as we use MediaWiki like them. I presumed Behind the Laughter was capitalized as thats the episode name. Agree with the presumptions. They should all be removed when spotted. ----- A Kind of Madness - [[User:Mr. Blackadder|CJC ]]/[[User talk:Mr. Blackadder| Blackadder]] 17:03, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

:What about adverts as well?--Sgtcook 20:40, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
+
::I like the idea. Not sure if the poll should go underneath the infobox though, maybe a link could be added '''inside''' the infobox which links to the poll? I think that would work better. Also, it would be more convenient to do this since a Transcript link will also be probably added to the template soon. Not fussed on changing how we do the referencing though... [[User:Effluvium|Effluvium]] 17:14, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
:And books.--Sgtcook 20:51, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

:Don't think there's any for adverts or books; i've come across Ullman Shorts (Ul), Episodes (Ep), the movie (mov), Treehouse of Horror (THOH), comics (Bon), and games does exist (Game).
+
:::I like the poll under the infobox however. It could be integrated into the template somehow. The whole tense thing is awkward though. I feel that it should be in past tense as these events have already happened. Episodes should be in present tense though. If you guys want, we could try out the new referencing, maybe even make a template for this, making the ref. smaller and up, like the actual reference numbers. The articles should not be put out of in-universe style as we have often spent so long putting them like this in the first place. ☆<span style="font-family:Algerian">[[User:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:green">The</span>]] [[User talk:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:red">Solar</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/Solar Dragon|<span style="color:blue">Dragon</span>]]</span>☆ 17:27, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
::::Let me be clear: I think we should continue to use in-universe, and that episode plots should be written in past tense. It's just that I think all other articles, characters, locations, would be better served written in present tense.
 +
::::And, Blackadder, there's always things we can do to make the wiki look better. For example, do our infoboxes have to look so...lame. [[User:TheUnderfaker|TheUnderfaker]] 17:38, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
:::::LAME? I love the new infoboxes! I'm not fussed on the EpisodePrevNext template since it was redesigned however, but the infoboxes are awesome! I don't think we should change the infoboxes, before anyone goes there! [[User:Effluvium|Effluvium]] 17:42, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
::::::Mhhh... I don't like the poll inside the infobox. Nor inside the article (like pictures). It'd be the same problem as ads. Big squares taking space. Oh, wait, I have an idea. The poll inside the infobox, but hidden, using the show/hide function, like the Wikisimpsons at Wikia. {{User:TheHomer/sig}} 17:48, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
:::::::Yeah, that could work! [[User:Effluvium|Effluvium]] 17:51, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

::::::::I wasn'tsuggesting the poll be ''in'' the infobox, just under it. [[User:TheUnderfaker|TheUnderfaker]] 17:55, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
:::::::::But under the infobox, it takes too much space. {{User:TheHomer/sig}} 18:00, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
::::::::::The poll integrated into it might be good with a show/hide feature. This would take up less space too. That is a good idea. Under it without the show/hide feature would take up too much space. Effluvium, we could remove the border on the EpisodePrevnext box as that was actually an accident and I never got round to removing it before another user changed the coding for the rest of them. Also, just thought you should know that I am in talks to get the Portuguese Wikisimpsons moved here. ☆<span style="font-family:Algerian">[[User:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:green">The</span>]] [[User talk:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:red">Solar</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/Solar Dragon|<span style="color:blue">Dragon</span>]]</span>☆ 18:03, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
:::::::::::My thinking was that we would just format the width of the poll to match the infobox if we put it underneath, but show/hide inside the infobox is fine. [[User:TheUnderfaker|TheUnderfaker]] 18:06, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
::::::::::::Yeah, show/hide is better, IMO. And OK, Solar, we'll get round to that sometime :) [[User:Effluvium|Effluvium]] 18:07, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
:::::::::::::But... I don't know how to implement that feature. We could call Smiley, or ask at Spanish Wikisimpsons. They use a template or something with a parameter to hide the box. We have a different style that does not work here. Either copying their javascript code, or, I don't know, asking them to help us. {{User:TheHomer/sig}} 18:09, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
 +
::::::::::::::I'm sure that either me or ShoutWiki's staff could figure it out. == Hiding attributes? ==

In the infoboxes (episode, character etc.), I could swear there's a way to hide attributes: for example, if you don't fill in a 'hair' attribute on a Character template for Milhouse's page, then the 'hair' line doesn't show up at all. Can we change the look of main page? We can use the look of the page in spanish. I think is better. We should do a vote. What do you think? [[W:C:es:simpsons:Portada|Link to page]]

:Edited link, i does look cooler. Another thing we need is a better skin. Anyone know if the skins are in CSS(CBA to look)?

You have to go in [[Special:Preferences]], then you go to "Skin" and click the "Smoke" skin and you save your changes at the bottom of the page. It's yellow you can watch it [http://simpsons.wikia.com/index.php?title=The_Simpsons&useskin=monaco&usetheme=smoke here].

PS: Congratulations for the 4,000 articles.

== Where to begin==

First let me say, I’m new to Wikisimpsons, but no to Wikipedia, where I’ve had my share of edits. (I went by a different name there.) I want to help improve Wikisimpsons and there are just some thing I want to discuss.

I noticed that the actual articles that inform you on how to edit at this Wiki, such as the Manual of Style, are not very organized. For example, the MoS makes it clear how to list a character’s or location’s appearances, but it doesn’t show the actual templates to do this. There is no link to [[Wikisimpsons:Templates]] from there, or anything. There is also no locations section at the MoS page.

The MoS also doesn’t make clear when and how to use section names. I still don’t know for sure if the “scenes” in “Behind the Scenes” is supposed to be capitalized or not, or if I’ve even been using that section correctly. Is it the same thing as a Trivia section or no? And is the “Used for” field in the location template supposed to be used to actually describe what it is the location is for, or name what the actually location is? For example, for the [[Springfield Public Library]], should it say, “Library” or “Research”?

I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining, I’m not, it’s just that if we want this Wiki to get organized, we have to start here. I don’t mind fixing these things myself. (Also, not that it’s a big deal, but I noticed that the syntax of the location template is itself unorganized. It requires that you capitalize the t in “Town” or otherwise it won’t show up, while other fields require that they remain lowercase such as “first appearances.”)

I also plan on improving the Project Locations page if no one minds. There is also no <nowiki>{{User Project Locations}}</nowiki> box.

Now unto another topic. A “stub” is characterized by an article that is a paragraph or less and could be more, but then there are some articles that could never be more than one paragraph, let alone a paragraph, such as “[[Ron's Meat]].” My question is, are articles this small--in this case, something that was just mere background scenery--worth an article at all? I would think no, but this is in essence an encyclopedia, so why not? I’m just wondering, for an article like that, when is it considered to be in a “finished” or “definitive” state, since it will technically always be a stub. Is there something we could use for this Wiki that says, though this article is just a stub, and will never reach featured article status, it is “complete”? An infobox or something. If not, do articles like this warrant their on page.

And last, but not least, these are just some suggestions that I have for Wikisimpsons:

*Change “Behind the scenes” to “Behind the laughter”. More to the point, and a lot of fans will immediately get the connotation.

*Perhaps making the yellow used in the episode tabs a little lighter. The current dark orangey yellow makes it a little hard to read.

*This is The Simpsons, so why not a quote of the day on the main page.

*Adding an “Employees” section to the location template would really help.

*And a picture for video games appearances that’s more related to the Simpsons like the others appearance pictures.

Again, these are just suggestions and my feeling won’t be hurt if they are not accepted.

I do all this rambling because I only want this Wiki looking its best. [[User:TheUnderfaker|TheUnderfaker]] 16:06, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

:Great suggestions! We'll have to wait and see what the other users says though, before making any big changes. {{User:Effluvium/sig}} 16:12, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

:To be honest, we need to agree to what we want in a MoS, as it seems all editors do it their way. I would be happy for you to help. I personally am fine with articles that cant be expanded being short. Over on brickipedia, where I also admin, we have a completness system, where if an article can't be made into a good or featured article, it can be complete. It could work here, but it only came about following a very rigid and structured FA and GA scheme. Behind the laughter sounds cool, and a quote a day is a good idea, as I found some funny quotes earlier, "Its Mr. McGreg, with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg". Your rambles, are very good. [[User:Kingcjc|King]][[User_Talk:Kingcjc|cjc]] 17:07, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

::We do need a few changes I feel. I never use the Manual of Style so if someone could bulk it up and start discussions on the talk page. If an article can't be made any bigger, it is not a stub. Remove the template. we should have the article as we are a Simpsons encyclopaedia. ☆<span style="font-family:Algerian">[[User:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:green">The</span>]] [[User talk:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:red">Solar</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/Solar Dragon|<span style="color:blue">Dragon</span>]]</span> 18:17, July 4, 2010 (UTC)

:::Each Bullet Point is a response to each of your ideas.

*Why didn't I think of that. Good Idea.

I have a few ideas on how to improve this wiki. Please comment.

Get rid of the Featured Clean Up box and just have a Spotlight article a day/a week. This is an article that is not a featured article, which is the point, we’re highlighting it on the main page to get editors to get it up to code, add more information, etc.
+
1. Instead of projects why don't we have a project-portal thing. If you're wondering what portals are here's an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Association_football example]. It's a good way to add some colour to this wiki.

 +
2. As well as having a general Featured Article why can't we have seperate articles for different subjects e.g. Featured Character, Featured Location etc. (In the project page)

I wouldn’t mind at least trying for a week having blog posts at the end of each article. The same 5 or so editors keep editing here (me, Effluvium, TheHomer, Ldude, Mythigator, Josegiraffio, Kingcjc, Smiley12, Solar Dragon, did I miss anyone?); we rarely get any new editors (who stay); editors come, make large improvements, and then just leave--I want to know why this is, and allowing people to comment on the articles (since no one is actually coming here to edit them) would allow for us to get advice on how to improve them and gauge just how many people are actually coming here to read them. This also might reduce vandalism if visitors can just post their thoughts on an article. Sure, most of the posts will probably be spam, but if we only display two posts at a time, it won’t really matter.
+
3. Always put suitable names for images.

 +
Again, please comment. {{dohsig}}

WE NEED TO GET ORGANIZED. It’s no wonder why editors keep leaving: there is no clear and concise guidelines to go by for any of our articles: episodes, characters, locations, items, lists, or other articles. I am also shocked at what passes for “Featured Article” at this Wiki. Several of these so-called featured articles have bad prose, no references (or references with broken links), and are not fully comprehensive. (By that, I don’t mean, for example, that Homer Simpson’s article should name EVERY job he’s ever had; I mean that articles shouldn’t have key pieces of information missing from them.) We want to be taken seriously, but we don’t take ourselves or our articles seriously.
+
1. A portal for projects is a bit silly. Just a list of them will do.

 +
2. The main page is already full enough. We couldn't possibly fit anything else on to it.

Original research has got to go. I don’t know who went around wrongly naming all the characters, but it has to stop. “Gilbert” Gunderson, Chester Turley? Are we going to enforce the Non-canon policy or not, because Chester Turley is what a card--not an episode--claimed Snake’s real name to be. I don’t mind that being mentioned in the article under a non-canon section, but to start the article out claiming that that is his real name, just no. Cecil Terwilliger’s page said that he has a son--a non-canon character from a comic--solely because he appeared as Bob’s nephew in that comic. For all we know, it could be someone else’s son.
+
3. This is something I have been doing a lot and making sure all images are under good names. They are normally uploaded under good names now too. ☆<span style="font-family:Algerian">[[User:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:green">The</span>]] [[User talk:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:red">Solar</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/Solar Dragon|<span style="color:blue">Dragon</span>]]</span>☆ 14:16, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

We have to get a policy on appearances. To list EVERY character’s appearance is ridiculous, when just about every Simpsons episode has a crowd scene. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to list every character’s every appearance for that matter. And I don’t think we need to list the appearances for the Simpson family because everyone knows, even someone who has never watched the show in their entire life can assume, that they’ve appeared--and they have (with the exception of Maggie)--in every episode.

We need to take prose seriously. We should have a template so that if you don’t feel comfortable with your prose (sentence structure, grammar, spelling), you can put it at the top of the article so that another editor can come along it improve it. No article should be allowed featured status until the prose is excellent.

Implement a system like [http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Wookieepedia:Comprehensive_article_nominations the one Wookieepedia is trialing now], which is similar to what I was trying to explain in [[#Where to begin|Where to begin]]. This way, for editors’ records and readers’ knowledge, we know when an article, which is not featured, is not a stub but complete and comprehensive. If we are going to implement a system like this, we have to be strict. If the article can reach featured status then it shouldn’t apply and any article that does qualify should be fully comprehensive.
+

== Tapped Out Recognition ==

I really don’t think writing in an in-universe style is going to help this wiki in the long-run. It might work for Wookieepedia and Lostpedia, but something obviously ain’t gelling here, and that might be it. People rather read Wikipedia’s Simpsons articles why? Because they are written from a real-world perspective.

I think we should recognize Tapped Out on the top of the page with the characters, episodes etc. It's very big in today's day in age and lots of people view the Wiki for it. ::What's the difference between Tapped Out and other ''The Simpsons'' games? If we have ''Tapped Out'' on the main page, it would be unfair to the other games (yeah, games have feelings too). Just because we get thousands of viewers because of ''Tapped Out'' doesn't mean we should prioritize it over other games and media. <span style="font-family:AR Darling,Baskerville Old Face,Bell MT">[[User:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:black">The</span> <span style="color:blue">Solar</span> <span style="color:red">Dragon</span>]] ([[User talk:Solar Dragon|<span style="color:bgreen">Talk</span>]] - [[Special:Contributions/Solar Dragon|Contribs.]])</span> 12:54, 3 February 2013 (EST)

:::Great point you have there Solar. The reason why I suggested this is that many people come here to check out Tapped Out quests and information and it's the newest and currently a very popular game that tons of people play today. We have to take referencing seriously. I’ll be reading an article and want to know where a bit of information is from, but there is no reference. We need references to verify that things are factually accurate and not just made-up by some fan. I also suggest that we make the References section be a drop-down box.

This building was pretty hard to get for me I got it in Lvl.11 I send Homer like 10 times but I remember I looked in every blog and all I found was "you have to send homer to eat at Krusty burger 3 times" until he got out with an exclamation point and send him again it didn't count the next time it work the point is never give up.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. It is no wonder why editors come here and then leave. Because they see all the tasks in front of them--they see all that needs to be repaired--and they get overwhelmed. I’m overwhelmed myself. People see this Wiki as a joke, not a trust-worthy online resource for Simpsons information. :You have some good points there. If you try designing some of the things you suggest for the main page and make it look better (It is only semi-protected). I will move the Featured Cleanup to a separate section, something like [[Wikisimpsons:Cleanup]]. In-universe style should be kept. Most wikis use it. We should too. We will not be changing that. If you start these changes and show us what they look like, we will then decide whether it will be kept or scrapped. == I have a question ==

:::::::I agree with the name change. "Wikisimpsons" is not a very good name, in my opinion. I like the idea of a home-page redesign too. This is a wiki dedicated to the biggest cartoon in world history! We need to start getting things together and being more professional. Great ideas, Underfaker. I noticed today the new "Wikia" logo up in the top left-hand corner, which looks great. However, I see no need to change the colour scheme of the wiki, it looks great and seems to be a decent enough colour to be recognized as something to do with The Simpsons. Maybe we could look at other wikis (Wookiepedia, Lostpedia, DC Comics?) to get some ideas which we could use? I'm happy to see that we are all putting forward our niggles and trying to find something that all of us are happy with - its great to see the community working together again! Maybe we could start re-designing the homepage before anything else? And the achievement system that Solar made a blog on is a step in the right direction. Im busy with other things at the momment, but in the summer holidays, I'll start getting to work on some new features. {{User:Effluvium/sig}} 18:45, July 14, 2010 (UTC)

If you look at other Wikia projects, many (if not all) of them are written in-universe. I agree, we should of some in-universe (Episodes, Show Runners, Production companies etc) but no, not the character pages - no. I agree that we need to establish some sort of new guidelines for editing and start making things uniform. I don't we on the episodes for instance, should start by saying: "Episode name" is the "episode number" of "season number". It was broadcast on "date" etc. I think we should just have a sentence or two of the basic plot (like they do on Memory Alpha) and have an extra tab or extra location for that information. Or maybe a template? These are all things we could work on. Its great to finally see some new blood running through the wiki! {{User:Effluvium/sig}} 18:52, July 14, 2010 (UTC)

::::::::::About the name change, Wookiepedia was already a big wiki outside of Wikia. Wikisimpsons started at Wikia. Wikisimpsons is probably the closest we could get to having a name change. More people are likely to search for Simpsons Wiki, which could return Wikisimpsons. Less, next to none, will search for Mmmpedia. It is not a well known name. In fact, Wikisimpsons is actually more well known. I don't feel we should change our name. == Inline CSS and vendor inclusivity ==

:::::::::::OK. I've been thinking that maybe we could contact some Simpsons fan websites and ask if they can list us as a friend. Quite a few I've visited are all linked up. Seeing as we have quite a high article count, this could be a good way to get more traffic and editors, aswell as some extra attention. Maybe they could just add our logo with the words: "Wikisimpsons, the Simpsons encylopedia" or something like that. Lostpedia and Wookiepedia are linked to other websites and I don't see why the Simpsons community cannot be connected with this wiki. {{User:Effluvium/sig}} 20:08, July 14, 2010 (UTC)
+
I see that the inline css is being included in templates. Consider offloading these to css classes to reduce the transclusion size. Maybe also compare the vendors that you're including to the traffic that you are receiving to see what vendor extension prefixes you still need. You've got a [[Fogburyport|page]] that has gone over the limit for too many includes. Another (dirty) fix would be to raise the transclusion limit. Yet another fix is to upgrade the Mediawiki backend, the new template format is XML and the wiki handles the heavy lifting of all the css.--[[User:PlNG|PlNG]] ([[User talk:PlNG|talk]]) 12:41, June 15, 2023 (EDT)

Community discussion[edit]

OK, I really think we should have one of these like every four months or so. No need everyone going off and doing their own thing; we all need to be on one accord.

This is not intended to be a long rant by me. This is me opening up the discussion to the ENTIRE community on their concerns or ways to improve the wiki. So I’ll start…

First, an idea I have: Just because we’re an encyclopedia, doesn’t mean we have to look like one. We look dull. Is it any wonder why new editors never stay around, which is why I admire those that do month after month.

What am I saying? Let’s spruce the place up. I was hoping that when we moved over to Shout, we would makes ourselves look vastly cooler than Wikia. Instead, it’s the same old same old.

Whatever the case, my idea was this: Adding a poll, to be directly located under the infobox, to every episode article, allowing users to rate the episode. Remember, we’re fans of the show, first and foremost, and I for one would like to know what other fans think. Here’s an example:

Rate “Who Shot Grampa’s Hat”.
You are not entitled to vote.
You are not entitled to view results of this poll.
There were 31 votes since the poll was created on 15:27, January 24, 2014.
poll-id A0C424F22265DCDF9EC3089D5BD6FB96

Then, each month, when we do the Featured Episode, we could display the average user rating (the one with the most votes), like so:

The Simpsons TV.png

FEATURED EPISODE

Old Money is the seventeenth episode of Season 2. It aired on March 28, 1991. It was written by Jay Kogen and Wallace Wolodarsky and was directed by David Silverman. Audrey Meadows guest starred in it as Bea Simmons, Grampa's new girlfriend. Professor Frink makes his debut in the episode. The episode features references to films such as If I Had a Million, and the Star Wars and Batman film franchises.

Grandpa Simpson falls in love with Bea Simmons, a fellow resident of the Springfield Retirement Castle. During the course of their brief romance, Bea passes away and leaves Grandpa her entire savings, $100,000. Grandpa decides to give the money to charity but can't decide which one is worthiest, but when he can't decide, Grampa heads for a casino to gamble it away.

Average User Rating: B - Read more of this episode | More featured episodes | Vote for Featured episode

We don’t have to use the parenthetical info, I was just playing around. I don’t know if it’s possible, but we can make the poll signed–in users only, so it’s more legit.

AS LONG as it just with that heading, and nothing else. However, we still need to reach a consensus as a community on whether it should be lowercase or uppercase.

We can call her Gloria Jailbird all we want to—until it’s stated as such in an episode (or one of The Simpsons: A Complete Guide books), the character is still officially just known as “Gloria”. Take Herbert Powell. If his last name had never been revealed, we’d have countless editors saying it’s “Simpson”. If a character’s age or birthdate is not given, don’t guess one. Just leave it blank. Only if a character says they’re in their 50s, or such, should we be putting that down.

Next, prose. Past or present, in–universe or out –of–universe is the question. Although, as I had expressed at one point, past sounds more professional, what I don’t like is how often, are articles come off as sounding like historical accounts: “once”, “at one point”, etc. Past tense is fine for out–of–universe, but in–universe and past tense don’t mix (Wikipedia has a list of the problems with this, by the way - see "The problem with in-universe perspective"), which is why I had suggested switching to out–of–universe. But, as Brian McClure once said, no sense trying to compete with Wikipedia, so I agree we should stay with in–universe. I will just suggest that our articles be written in present tense. Again, I use Wikipedia’s reasoning as to why.

Brian also suggested using in–paragraph citations like Lostpedia does, which I think is a great idea as you would have the reference right there and, again, it’s just one more thing we can do so we don’t look like your average, bland wiki encyclopedia, with a list of references at the bottom of every article.

Well, that’s it for me, for now. Again, feel free to express your concerns or ideas. TheUnderfaker 16:55, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

The Poll idea could be a good way to get people more involved, though its quite hard to make us look different to others wikis as we use MediaWiki like them. I presumed Behind the Laughter was capitalized as thats the episode name. Agree with the presumptions. They should all be removed when spotted. ----- A Kind of Madness - CJC / Blackadder 17:03, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I like the idea. Not sure if the poll should go underneath the infobox though, maybe a link could be added inside the infobox which links to the poll? I think that would work better. Also, it would be more convenient to do this since a Transcript link will also be probably added to the template soon. Not fussed on changing how we do the referencing though... Effluvium 17:14, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I like the poll under the infobox however. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 17:27, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Let me be clear: I think we should continue to use in-universe, and that episode plots should be written in past tense. It's just that I think all other articles, characters, locations, would be better served written in present tense.
And, Blackadder, there's always things we can do to make the wiki look better. For example, do our infoboxes have to look so...lame. TheUnderfaker 17:38, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
LAME? I love the new infoboxes! I'm not fussed on the EpisodePrevNext template since it was redesigned however, but the infoboxes are awesome! I don't think we should change the infoboxes, before anyone goes there! Effluvium 17:42, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Mhhh... — TheHomer (TalkContributions) 17:48, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that could work! Effluvium 17:51, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I wasn'tsuggesting the poll be in the infobox, just under it. TheUnderfaker 17:55, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
But under the infobox, it takes too much space. — TheHomer (TalkContributions) 18:00, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
The poll integrated into it might be good with a show/hide feature. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 18:03, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
My thinking was that we would just format the width of the poll to match the infobox if we put it underneath, but show/hide inside the infobox is fine. TheUnderfaker 18:06, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, show/hide is better, IMO. And OK, Solar, we'll get round to that sometime :) Effluvium 18:07, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
But... I don't know how to implement that feature. We could call Smiley, or ask at Spanish Wikisimpsons. They use a template or something with a parameter to hide the box. We have a different style that does not work here. Either copying their javascript code, or, I don't know, asking them to help us. — TheHomer (TalkContributions) 18:09, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm sure that either me or ShoutWiki's staff could figure it out. I'm guessing that they use the same show/hide code as us and it is just a matter of implementing it into the infobox. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 18:15, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

I could implement the poll! See this example. The problem is that the poll is too big. — TheHomer (TalkContributions) 18:35, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
It looks really good. Shame about the poll being too big. Is there a way to format the code to make it the same size as the infobox? Effluvium 17:30, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Hm, the poll appears to be working now. So I guess we can implement it, then. TheUnderfaker 15:48, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

I know. I'll add it in once I find out why Transcript appears in the yellow area. I have also sorted out another major problem of the real world icon overlapping the other icons. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 17:49, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

A Few Ideas[edit]

I have a few ideas on how to improve this wiki. Please comment.

1. Instead of projects why don't we have a project-portal thing. If you're wondering what portals are here's an example. It's a good way to add some colour to this wiki.

2. As well as having a general Featured Article why can't we have seperate articles for different subjects e.g. Featured Character, Featured Location etc. (In the project page)

3. Always put suitable names for images.

Again, please comment. Doh5678 (Any Notices) • (My Edits) • (Wikipedia Page)

1. A portal for projects is a bit silly. Just a list of them will do.

2. The main page is already full enough. We couldn't possibly fit anything else on to it.

3. This is something I have been doing a lot and making sure all images are under good names. They are normally uploaded under good names now too. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 14:16, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I know it's an old topic but i think the portal idea is good. A portal for characters, comics and so on. FatHomerTalk 04:22, 5 August 2011 (EDT)
I know this is even older now, but it would be a great idea, I think. I was going to suggest this as well. Randomno 11:02, 26 January 2012 (EST)
We have links in the sidebar. That's more than enough. SolarDragonName.png (Talk - Contribs.) 11:07, 26 January 2012 (EST)
We hade Comics before on sidebar but, when we create the "other" wiki, we removed it. Should we not move it back now? /AleWi 11:40, 26 January 2012 (EST)

Wiki Stats[edit]

I think the sidebar should have ** Special:Statistics|{{NUMBEROFUSERS}} users. FatHomerTalk 04:02, 28 January 2012 (EST)

Done. The Solar Dragon 04:34, 28 January 2012 (EST)

April's Fools[edit]

Whoever came up with the Family Guy idea is a genius. But I think Moe should be Quagmire!Dolph 19:17, 31 March 2012 (EDT)Dolph

Damn - who did I put as Quagmire?--Cook879 17:44, 7 April 2012 (EDT)
Oh yeah, Lenny.--Cook879 17:46, 7 April 2012 (EDT)

Featured comic article[edit]

I think we should have a featured comic article, whether it's a story or a comic. We don't have that many, but still a few complete comic stories. What do you think? | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 19:45, 4 May 2012 (EDT)

I think this is a good idea! However, the majority of comic articles are incomplete (I'm hoping to complete a handful this summer) and I don't know if Solar really wants to go through another main page redesign. :P --Nick97 (talk ~ contribs) 20:35, 4 May 2012 (EDT)
I'll complete as many as I can from the Annual 2012. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 20:36, 4 May 2012 (EDT)
How many comics are in the annual? And where did you buy it? --Nick97 (talk ~ contribs) 20:50, 4 May 2012 (EDT)
I got it for Christmas, so I don't know where it came from. The stories are here. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 20:54, 4 May 2012 (EDT)
Ah, I see. Well good luck with those! --Nick97 (talk ~ contribs) 21:01, 4 May 2012 (EDT)
Our comic articles are among our worst articles on the wiki. I don't think we will get enough good quality articles to make them featured. Plus, the main page is full enough as it is. ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.)☆ 05:11, 5 May 2012 (EDT)
Hmm... I suppose... But can we do anything for articles like A Simpleton Plan? It is complete, and it just needs an image, which I asked AleWi if he could do because I have the annual 2012 which is hardcover. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 06:05, 5 May 2012 (EDT)

I think it would be good to publicize our comics a bit more, but we can't add anything else to main page and there aren't enough complete, non-Engrish ones to fulfil this right now.--Cook879 06:59, 5 May 2012 (EDT)
Yeah. It's a shame you can get all the episode online, but not all the comics. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 07:08, 5 May 2012 (EDT)
I bet every comic is online, you just gotta find it. --Cook879 07:12, 5 May 2012 (EDT)
I think Comic can have a own main page when user click on Comic in the sidebar. /AleWi 15:06, 5 May 2012 (EDT)

Tapped Out Recognition[edit]

I think we should recognize Tapped Out on the top of the page with the characters, episodes etc. It's very big in today's day in age and lots of people view the Wiki for it. Anyone agree/disagree? -- WebkinzManiaTalkContributionsEditcount 12:04, 3 February 2013 (EST)

I agree - sort-of. We should recognize Tapped Out on the wiki, but not on the top of the Main Page. I think it would look out of place. ~ Phinbart (talkcontribs) 12:10, 3 February 2013 (EST)
What's the difference between Tapped Out and other The Simpsons games? If we have Tapped Out on the main page, it would be unfair to the other games (yeah, games have feelings too). Just because we get thousands of viewers because of Tapped Out doesn't mean we should prioritize it over other games and media. The Solar Dragon (Talk - Contribs.) 12:54, 3 February 2013 (EST)
Great point you have there Solar. The reason why I suggested this is that many people come here to check out Tapped Out quests and information and it's the newest and currently a very popular game that tons of people play today. I would suggest just putting that on the front page, but if others agree that we should add games overall, then I'm fine with that too. -- WebkinzManiaTalkContributionsEditcount 13:07, 3 February 2013 (EST)

Problems with Gulp n Blow (Krusty Heavy user) (Quest)[edit]

This building was pretty hard to get for me I got it in Lvl.11 I send Homer like 10 times but I remember I looked in every blog and all I found was "you have to send homer to eat at Krusty burger 3 times" until he got out with an exclamation point and send him again it didn't count the next time it work the point is never give up. For unlocking new building you must follow the gameplay at The Simpsons: Tapped Out Gameplay level 5-9 and The Simpsons: Tapped Out Gameplay level 10-14 and let all the characters doing their task they asking of. /AleWi 15:18, 30 July 2013 (EDT)

Simpsons Wikia or Wikisimpsons[edit]

I didn't know where to post this, so... I can't understand which one is the official wikia? The Simpsons Wikia or Wikisimpsons? I've also posted this on Simpsons Wikia. I can't choose which Wiki should I contribute to, since both of them are good. To which one should I contribute to and why? Vilius (talk) 14:57, June 15, 2014 (EDT)

We originated from Wikia but when the entire community decided to move away, Wikia refused to close down the clone and got new people to come in and take over from our work. They're a rip-off clone of us. We're also bigger, have a better structure and layout and source all of our facts. We're the more trustworthy wiki. A lot of what you can read on the Wikia one may be wrong. The Solar Dragon 15:00, June 15, 2014 (EDT)

Any plans for 30k?[edit]

Big milestone, anything other than it being added to the Wikisimpsons article? | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 17:42, July 26, 2014 (EDT)

Number of pages means nothing. Quality of pages means everything. So, no. The Solar Dragon 17:52, July 26, 2014 (EDT)
We can celebrate 30k pages of reasonable quality? The number seems to be increasing a lot more slowly now, and I don't think it's because we've run out of topics. | SimpsonsFR.pngSimpsonsFA.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFD.pngSimpsonsFO.pngSimpsonsFM.pngSimpsonsFN.pngSimpsonsFO.png | Talk | Contributions | Edit count | 17:56, July 26, 2014 (EDT)

Error[edit]

I know that this page is for whole wiki discussion but i'd like to report an error with the 'on this day' 1916: Robby Krieger, American rock guitarist, songwriter and guest star in a deleted scene, was born. He (as his article says) was born in 1946.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Hutchy01 (talkcontribs) 12:21, January 8, 2015‎

It's been fixed. Thanks for bringing this up. The Solar Dragon 12:36, January 8, 2015 (EST)

I have a question[edit]

Are bots accepted here? Banana439monkey (talk) 05:34, October 29, 2016 (EDT)

Yes they are, although I have to approve them first. We don't really have too much need for bots, but if you think of a task that needs doing, I can do it. The Solar Dragon 06:24, October 29, 2016 (EDT)
Where do we request them? Banana439monkey (talk) 13:30, October 29, 2016 (EDT)
Here or my talk page will do. I don't see the need of anyone else having a bot. I can use both Pywikipediabot and AWB so I have everything covered and have the time to do it. The Solar Dragon 13:42, October 29, 2016 (EDT)
Okay. Banana439monkey (talk) 13:45, October 29, 2016 (EDT)

Czech Simpsons Wiki[edit]

This site isn't a wiki. --CBG Talk 07:09, April 21, 2023 (EDT)

It was at some point when they decided to work with us. But looks like they gave up on being a wiki. I've removed it from the page. The Solar Dragon 08:03, April 21, 2023 (EDT)

Inline CSS and vendor inclusivity[edit]

I see that the inline css is being included in templates. Consider offloading these to css classes to reduce the transclusion size. Maybe also compare the vendors that you're including to the traffic that you are receiving to see what vendor extension prefixes you still need. You've got a page that has gone over the limit for too many includes. Another (dirty) fix would be to raise the transclusion limit. Yet another fix is to upgrade the Mediawiki backend, the new template format is XML and the wiki handles the heavy lifting of all the css.--PlNG (talk) 12:41, June 15, 2023 (EDT)

I have fixed the Fogburyport page (that was a mistake). But I'll pass this message onto the server manager so he can take a look into it. The Solar Dragon 18:25, June 15, 2023 (EDT)
