Genre: Sitcom

Hannigan, M.F.A. is a classic sitcom whose reruns are shown on Tube Town. Its original airdates aren't known, but are probably around the 1970s.

History

Little is known about Hannigan, M.F.A. except that its title character, Hannigan, is an art aficionado and possesses a Master of Fine Arts academic qualification. Judging by the way he dresses, Hannigan may also be a police detective or private investigator.

Behind the Laughter

  • Hannigan, M.F.A. is a parody of Columbo:
    • Columbo has had several incarnations, but is best known for the version with Peter Falk in the title role, with the show airing as a regular TV series from 1971 to 1978, and as a series of TV movies from 1968–1971 and 1989-2003.
    • Hannigan bears a very strong resemblance to Lt. Frank Columbo as portrayed by Falk.
    • In real life, Peter Falk was an accomplished artist. However, Columbo's general demeanor is gruff and unsophisticated, hardly the type of person who would take much interest in art.
  • Hannigan, M.F.A. may also be a spoof of shows that aired in the same time frame as Columbo and have as a title the main character's name followed by his professional qualification, such as Marcus Welby, M.D. and Quincy, M.E..
  • Hannigan might also be a parody of Nero Wolfe, a fictional detective who does have an interest in art.
  • The painting Hannigan is studying is The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh.
