Cultural references
- The comic's title and plot are based on the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
- The dog with Groundskeeper Willie's head is a reference to a scene in the 1978 remake, where a dog with a man's head frightens the female protagonist, Elizabeth.
- While Homer is running from the pod people he briefly talks to a man named Pete Benson. Pete tells Homer that he's being chased by a horde of zombies and heads for an abandoned shopping mall, à la Dawn of the Dead.
- Pete Benson is an employee at Bongo Comics.
- The final scene is a reference to the Twilight Zone episode "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?". The aliens and monsters that appear are additional references to: The Terminator, Planet of the Apes, Dracula, Frankenstein, Friday the 13th, and the Monty Python's Flying Circus episode "You're No Fun Anymore". There are also references in this scene to Soylent Green and the Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man".
- The mental hospital has a plaque which reads "Charlton Heston Messiah complex est: 1993". This is a reference to the actor of the same name, who starred in a number of Christian films.
- A Frenchman is holding a book titled Le Genius du Jerry Lewis.
- Maggie gives Homer John Tesh music to send him to sleep.
