Otto: [pointing to the title graphic] "Gnarly". That means it totally shreds.

[Otto begins his lesson in snowboarder lingo.]
Otto: Showboarding is not just a sport ... it's a lifestyle ... and a language ... and a way to slide down a hill. But if you don't savvy the board lingo, you could get lost in more ways than one. Here's an example:
[The scene shifts to Dolph and Kearney snowboarding down a hill.]
Dolph: Hey, dude! This tight hill has like a total bulletproof S-rail coming up. Better duckfoot that phat board, or you'll be doing a sick fakie hip!
Kearney: [quizzically, having no idea what Dolph just said] Huh?
[The hill ends in a cliff at the bottom. Dolph makes a sharp left turn and slides along the edge. Kearney misses the turn and goes over the edge, screaming as he falls.]
Otto: Don't let this happen to you. Here's what should've happened.

[Rewind to the same scene of Dolph and Kearney snowboarding down the hill.]
Dolph: Hey, dude! This tight hill has like a total bulletproof S-rail coming up. Better duckfoot that phat board, or you'll be doing a sick fakie hip!
Kearney: [smiling] Wicked!
[The hill ends in a cliff at the bottom. Dolph makes a sharp left turn and slides along the edge. Kearney misses the turn and goes over the edge, screaming as he falls.]
Otto: [chagrined] Oh. Guess that part was the same. But at least he understood what the other dude said!

[Otto now appears above a list of snowboarder terms and their English equivalents.]
Otto: And now you can understand by using this handy snowboarder's translator!
[No translation is provided of what Dolph said to Kearney, but the translator has several other entries (including the classic "blast a dookie") and is richly illustrated in the margins with scenes of Otto, Dolph and Kearney enjoying a day on the slopes with their boards. End of lesson.]
