- This episode marks the first appearance of The Seven Duffs: Sleazy, Queasy, Edgy, Surly, Tipsy, Remorseful, and Dizzy. Surly is the only one who speaks, this is the exact opposite to their parody The Seven Dwarfs seeing as all save Dopey speaks, and only Surly is only one of The Seven Duffs who speaks and the Duffs are tall whereas the dwarfs are small.
- Aunt Selma had four beer smoothies.
Cultural references
- Lisa's exclamation of "I am the Lizard Queen!" and her subsequent trip is reference to "Lizard King" by The Doors. She also dances like Jim Morrison, the lead singer.
- "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead" is from The Wizard of Oz.
- The poem Aunt Gladys starts in her will is Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken.
- Marge and Homer are watching Yentl, they then watch The Erotic Adventures of Hercules.
- The Duff beer for me, Duff beer for you ride is reference to the It's a Small World ride at Disneyland.
- Duff Gardens a parody of Busch Gardens.
- The title is a reference to the novel Sophie's Choice
