Outside the Lines is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #240.
Synopsis
- "Homer joins the stress-reducing, adult coloring book craze, but before long his new daily obsession begins to creep into his dream life."
Plot
The Simpson family go to Book Buffet so that Lisa can get the new Happy Little Elves book, Curse of the Ogre Part Two. Whilst in the book store, Homer finds a copy of Kingdom of Colorful Creatures, but Marge suggests finding a more age-appropriate book for him. The shop employee then mentions that coloring books are popular among adults these days as many adults find comfort in them. Homer decides to buy the book.
The coloring book starts to take over Homer's life, with him coloring in at work and at Moe's Tavern. He also stops watching television because it distracts him from coloring. Many hours later, Homer falls asleep and dreams that he's in the coloring book. There, he meets Foxy, who calls Homer a criminal because he kept coloring outside the lines. He then shows Homer that a porcupine can't get into his house anymore as he colored outside of the lines on him. Foxy then takes Homer to see the Weasel King who tasks Homer with either going to the front of the book to get the free eraser, or the back of the book to get the free pencil sharpener. Homer decides to go to the back to see how the book ends.
On the journey, Foxy tells Homer that he can't walk on non-colored pages, so Homer colors in as he goes. Homer then finds that Foxy was lying when he jumps to a non-colored part of the page to escape a collapsing bridge, with Foxy saying that he just doesn't like to walk on non-colored pages. Homer and Foxy continue, with Homer coloring along the way, until they get to a dragon. The two of them escape through the dragon's cave, with Homer turning the page on the dragon to escape it. The two of them continue through the book until they get to the sharpener. Homer then decides that he wants the eraser too and Foxy tells Homer that he could use the same trick he used on the dragon to get to the front of the book. Homer agrees to do so, but Foxy stays behind.
As Homer gets out of the book, he finds that the Weasel King has stolen the eraser. He tells Homer that he was planning on stealing the sharpener from him too so he could rule the kingdom forever. Homer and the Weasel King fight until Foxy comes out of the book and pushes the Weasel King off the table. As Homer and Foxy celebrate, Homer starts to disappear as he's waking up. When Homer wakes up in the real world, he realizes that he was really obsessed with the book and throws it away. The book falls open to a page where Foxy is sitting on the throne with the eraser and sharpener, and all the animals are bowing to him.
