*The story is done in a style strongly reminiscent of the ''{{w|Choose Your Own Adventure}}'' book series, which was very popular during the 1980s and 1990s. In the books, readers would read a portion of the text, have a choice to make at the end, and then be directed to a different page depending on what their choice was. Readers would move forward or backward through the pages and end up at a good or bad ending, very similar to how ''Grampa Simpson's Great Sandwich Caper!'' is laid out.

Cultural references[edit]

  • The Shawshank Redemption: After the failed bus jump escape from the police, Grampa and the Springfield Mafia are caught and put in jail. Grampa, telling the story, says, "I stayed there for many years until a poster of Rita Hayworth helped me to escape", a reference to Andy Dufresne using pin-up posters (beginning with Rita Hayworth) to conceal his escape tunnel in the movie.
  • Star Wars: Grampa finds a locked treasure chest but has no lock picking tools, so he uses a raygun to shoot the lock open. He then says, "Lock picks and tools are no match for a good blaster at your side!" This echoes Han Solo's derisive line about the Force and lightsabers in Star Wars: A New Hope, "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side."
