Pool Sharks is a business in Springfield that sells above-ground swimming pools. The business's slogan is "Where the buyer is our chum" and the sign depicts a man on an inner tube surrounded by sharks.
History
After Bart and Lisa swam in the Springfield Pool-Mobile and convinced Homer to buy a swimming pool for the family, they visited Pool Sharks to pick one out. The salesman showed them through the outdoor display of swimming pools, pointing out the various models: "Over here we have the Hick Tub, the Insta-Rust, that's the Lightning Magnet, that's the Tinkler -" At that point Homer cut the salesman off, saying that he liked the sound of the Tinkler and that they would take that one. Marge then asked if it was true that they needed to wait an hour after eating before going in. After a brief pause, the salesman replied that selling pools wasn't what he really did; instead, he was a keyboard player. After making the purchase, the Simpsons took the pool home and assembled it.
Behind the Laughter
- Multiple punning is at play in Pool Sharks' name and slogan:
- The business's name is a pun on "Pool shark", a generally derogatory slang term for either a pool hustler or a highly skilled pool player.
- Chumming is a fishing term for tossing fish blood and/or body parts (referred to as "chum") into the water to attract other fish, particularly sharks. "Chum" is also a somewhat old-fashioned slang term for "friend". Pool Sharks' slogan is a pun on the double meaning.
