The film was shown every year at Christmas for 35 years in a row. The network was reluctant to repeat it yet again, so Roger Meyers, Jr. asked Abe Simpson to create something new and fresh, still unaware that it was actually Bart and Lisa writing under Abe's name. They came up with A Springfield Christmas Carol which Meyers was highly impressed with. However, when Christmas arrived, The Happy Little Elves Save Christmas aired instead. Abe watched the cartoon and mistakenly thought it was the best thing he had ever written.
