Marge read the book when they were in Havana, Cuba. It mentioned visiting American writer Ernest Hemingway's house, but the Simpsons only know him as Mariel Hemingway's grandfather.

The author of the book is Elian Gonzalez who as a young boy in 2000 became embroiled in a heated international custody and immigration controversy between the governments of Cuba and the United States.
