Finding Your Roots is a documentary TV series where celebrities go through the "Book of Life" presented to them by host Henry Louis Gates Jr. about their family histories.

Carl Carlson, an adoptee, went onto the show to learn about his heritage, taking the spot on the show that was supposed to be for Rainier Wolfcastle. Carl learned that his ancestor Ellis was born a slave, but after becoming emancipated traveled west to be a cowboy and also sired a long line of bull riders including Wyatt, Carl's biological father.
