Maggie Simpson in: The Longest Daycare is an animated 3D short film starring Maggie Simpson. The short aired from July 13, 2012 onwards in the USA before Ice Age: Continental Drift in theaters (though it was released in many countries beforehand, first in Australia on June 25).
The short sees Maggie return to the Ayn Rand School for Tots, where she endures tests and ends up in a "Nothing Special" room. Maggie's arch-nemesis, Gerald Samson, is also there and tries to smash a cocoon that Maggie is trying to save.
The producers decided to focus the short on Maggie as it is hard to make a 20 minute Maggie episode, but easy to make a 4-5 minute short. James Brooks came up with the idea of doing a short, similar the Pixar shorts. The short is dialogue-free. David Silverman, who has directed several episodes of The Simpsons as well as The Simpsons Movie, served as director. The short has been nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject, and was well received by critics, many claiming it was better than the film that followed.
