Harvey Fierstein (born June 6, 1952) is an American actor and playwright. He is best known for his very gravelly, deep-pitched voice.

Biography

Fierstein has numerous acting credits on Broadway, in film, and on television. He originated the role of Edna Turnblad in the Broadway musical Hairspray. He has also played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

Fierstein is openly gay in real life, and has become an unofficial celebrity spokesperson on gay civil rights issues.

On The Simpsons, Fierstein voiced Karl, Homer's assistant in the episode "Simpson and Delilah."

Trivia

  • Fierstein's status as an openly gay celebrity has given rise to widespread speculation that his Simpsons character Karl is either gay or bisexual. However, there is a lot of ambiguous information regarding Karl's sexual orientation, and not enough information to definitively settle the question.
  • Fierstein rejected the chance to reprise the role of Karl in "Three Gays of the Condo."
