Stephen Sondheim is a well-known songwriter for musical theater. Among his best known scores include West Side Story (lyrics, music by Leonard Bernstein), Gypsy (lyrics, music by Jule Styne), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, A Little Night Music, Company, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods. However, he did not write the musical Cats, as Krusty thought. His song "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music was sung by Krusty in the episode Krusty Gets Kancelled.

Sondheim appeared as himself in the episode Yokel Chords.
