Cultural references
- The opening titles is similar to the Munsters.
- The title G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad is a reference to the movie Ghost Dad.
- All the ways that Homer is almost killed is similar to deaths in the Final Destination series.
- The following fairy tale creatures made an appearance in "Scary Tales Can Come True": Rapunzel, Troll under the Bridge, 3 Bears, Goldilocks, and the Witch from Hansel and Gretel.
- The way the dolphins attack Lenny is similar to how Jaws killed Crissy.
- The dolphins squeak "Sound Off"
- Grandpa being eaten by the dolphin is similar to the sequence in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
- The way the dolphins watch the Springfieldians is the same as The Birds.
- This is the second Halloween episode in a row (third in all, if you count Treehouse of Horror VII) with the third segment ending in the world doomed.
- Strangely the only people who pulled out firearms were the police force, even though it has been shown that nearly everyone in springfield carries at least one weapon.
