Transvestite v. Transsexual[edit]

There seems to be a bit of confusion about the topic, so I'll explain the distinction.

A transvestite is a person who (for whatever reason) dresses as the opposite sex. This isn't necessarily any indication of the person's sexual orientation or of any inclination toward, or interest in, changing genders.

A transsexual is a person who has changed from one gender to the other, or who is in the process of doing so. It's not unusual for these individuals to dress as the opposite sex while they're awaiting or in the process of having surgery and/or hormone treatments for gender reassignment. However, transsexualism and transvestitism are most definitely NOT synonymous.

To sum up, "transvestite" means you're wearing different covering; "transsexual" means you're changing your plumbing. Any questions? -- Mythigator 08:58, 11 March 2013 (EDT)

As of 2020, "Transsexual" and "Transvestite" are both outdated and offensive terminology; I have anonymously updated the language to the more casual and colloquial term "Trans" --12.207.19.66 15:13, January 9, 2020 (EST)
The correct term is "Transgender", so I've changed it to that. The Solar Dragon 16:17, January 9, 2020 (EST)
