Blog:Grabpics as character images

Wikisimpsons - The Simpsons Wiki

Okay, this has been a fairly long time coming for me. I do not like the images that are known as "grabpics". These images are taken from an episode screenshot and altered. Often, these images are altered too much, with the colors being almost completely wrong. It is my preference to use actual episode screenshots over these kinds of images as the screenshots are official, grabpics are not. It will definitely take a while to replace all of these images but I personally believe it should be done. Unofficial images shouldn't be used on the wiki. Well, some "grabpics" have actually appeared on the show's Facebook/Twitter page so, at least those ones should stay as they would be official. / Loco87 (TALK / Contribs) 18:22, February 27, 2015 (EST)
If they do, they usually get a Matt Groening signature. Those ones are okay in my books. It's the unofficial ones I want gone. The Solar Dragon 18:24, February 27, 2015 (EST)
I admit, I haven't seen all of the grabpics on this site yet, but I can sort of understand why some people might prefer them over screenshots of characters. For instance, I've noticed that there are separate pages for even the most minor of minor characters, like some of the Spuckler children. Their pictures (not all, but for many of them), while still viewable, are rather blurry or grainy because it was a screenshot, and I don't think the characters have a proper onscreen "close-up" to get a better quality screenshot. Here's one example: Rumor Spuckler. And I'm not sure if all of these characters have an official grabpic with Matt's signature either? At the same time, I can see how the licensing complication comes with using grabpics by other people. Maybe we can add footnotes like "Original design owned by Fox" and then add "Redrawn by (enter user's name)"? Just an idea. Mrs JohnnyTightlips (talk) 19:59, February 27, 2015 (EST)
To be perfectly honest, I actually prefer the grabpics with transparent backgrounds, assuming they're show accurate for things like colour, line art, etc. I dunno, I guess I just like the cleaner, uncluttered appearance? That said though, I'm not gonna go up in flames if you decide to change to actual screenshots, and I understand it would probably be best to have official images. So, either way is fine by me. --Nick97 (talk ~ contribs) 00:56, February 28, 2015 (EST)
I agree with Nick. —Fred (Talk Contribs.) 00:59, February 28, 2015 (EST)
Whilst I originally liked the grabpics, I started liking them less and less. Especially as some of them just look plain weird (also, check out the original image of that!!!) Some of them are kind of accurate but most of them are incorrectly colored to my knowledge. A fact that becomes painfully obvious when we upload Tapped Out artwork of some of these characters. Plus, I'm only talking about removing the non-official grabpics that have just been redrawn by random people. The ones uploaded to The Simpsons Facebook and Twitter for example can be seen as official artwork, not grabpics. The Solar Dragon 04:32, February 28, 2015 (EST)
Yeah, ones like that Sophie pic definitely need to go. Honestly, with the way Tapped Out is going, we'll probably be able to replace most of the recurring character grabpics with game art work anyways. :P --Nick97 (talk ~ contribs) 11:56, February 28, 2015 (EST)
I prefer screenshots rather than grabpics too T-Mac (talk) 07:56, February 28, 2015 (EST)
I agree that we should begin to use screenshots over grabpics because the grabpics we usually get are from Simpsonspedia, which is against wiki rules (or was, because when I complained an image was from Simpsonspedia it was ignored), and are usually stretched, drawn oddly, or different. If we do want any transparent backgrounds, we should get an image from the ep/other media (books, comics, games etc.) that could be easy to edit and do it ourselves, like I've (attempted) to do in the past. I agree with Solar, I have come to like grabpics less and less. ~ Phinbart (talkcontribs) 08:26, February 28, 2015 (EST)
Sure - screenshots are better, grabpics are too open to being changed by the person creating them (intentionally or not). Cjcsdonut.png -- CJC 10:34, March 7, 2015 (EST)
