Homer and Bart entered Santa's Little Helper in an ugly dog contest. When they were designing a look for the dog, Homer said he wanted "something that looks like this" and showed Bart the "bat boy" creature on the cover of the magazine.

The World Weekly News is a parody of the real-life tabloid magazine Weekly World News, which was published in the USA from 1979 to 2007. "Bat Boy" was one of the magazine's recurring subjects.
