Welcome!

Wiki.png

Hello, Jack Phoenix, and welcome to Wikisimpsons!

Thank you for your edits to the MediaWiki:Common.js article and taking interest in our wiki. If you have any troubles, feel free to ask questions on my talk page or any other any experienced editors' talk page. Also, you could look at a help page.

Here are a few pages to help out new editors such as yourself:

Please sign your name on talk pages by using four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your name and the date. Signing your comments is important, as it lets other editors know who has posted which comments.

Again, welcome! ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 08:16, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, red link was annoying me. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 08:16, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Social tool and comment logging

Hi, could you enable both of these please? Also, is there a way to make it auto go to your wiki user page instead of the social page with the social tool?

Oh, and I sent an email through Special:Contact asking about you installing an extension, WhosOnline. Could you do this?

Thanks, ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 22:27, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

I've enabled logging for Comments extension and social tools package. The user levels and the required points are using the defaults (i.e. if you have 1,200 points, your rank is apprentice; uploading your first avatar earns you 100 points, a mainspace edit earns you 50 points, only main NS edits can earn you points and so on). Please let me know what ranks are more suitable for Wikisimpsons and I'll be happy to customize them for you.
If you need any help in using the social tools, feel free to take a look at the help page and ask me. The sad truth is that despite the amount of sites using the SocialProfile extension, how to use them (i.e. how to create new gifts and/or awards and so on) is largely undocumented. I'll be happy to help you out should you need any help.
I don't think that there's a way to make it automatically go to your wiki user page as the choice between wiki/social user page is a per-user choice.
Regarding WhosOnline, that will unfortunately need to wait until next week, I'm afraid. I recall reading your contact message, but I probably forgot to answer to it — sorry about that! I prefer wiki talk pages for non-super-secret stuff so that I'll get notified if I'm about to forget important stuff. Or better yet, sometimes someone else might be a lot helpful and faster in answering a question than I. ;-) --Jack Phoenix <staff/> (contact) 23:23, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Can you change the names of the user levels to something more Simpsons-like then? Thanks, ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 06:25, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Could you also explain to me on how to create new awards and gifts as well please? ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 07:14, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
I can change the user levels if you provide me the new user levels and required points, preferrably in this format (for better readbility).
New awards (or as they're called internally in the extension, "system gifts") can be created by going to Special:SystemGiftManager (requires the 'awardsmanage' permission, which administrators by default have). Click on the "+ Add new gift" link and you'll be presented with a form to create a new gift. "Gift name" is the name of the gift; something like "5 friends milestone", for example. "Description" is a short description about the gift and how one is able to get it (for example, "For making 5 friends"). "Gift type" is one of the following:
  • edit — normal mainspace editing on the wiki (or to be exact, editing any namespace in $wgNamespacesForEditPoints)
  • vote — voting; requires the Vote extension
  • comment — commenting (Comments extension)
  • comment_plus — giving thumbs up to other users' comments
  • opinions_created — not available
  • opinions_pub — not available
  • referral_complete — referring other users to the wiki (if you want to give out points for referring other users to this wiki, this needs to be separately enabled — let me know)
  • friend — friending other users
  • foe — foeing other users
  • challenges_won — not available
  • gift_rec — receiving gifts from other users
  • points_winner_weekly — not available
  • points_winner_monthly — not available
  • quiz_points — not yet available, related to the social Quiz extension
"Threshold" is the threshold which a user must pass to get the award. For example, if you created an award with gift type "edit" and threshold "10", it would mean that the user needs 10 (mainspace) edits to get it. Or an award with type gift_rec and threshold of 5 would mean that the user needs to receive 5 gifts from other users to get the award.
After you've filled out all the fields, press the "Create gift" button and your gift will be created. Now you will also be able to upload an image for the new award you created. (SocialProfile extension ships with a bunch of award images; if you don't want to create your own images for each award, feel free to use those)
Creating ordinary gifts is very similar to creating awards and it's done through Special:GiftManager. The form for adding a new gift has only two fields this time, for the name and the description of the gift. Once you've filled those out, press the "Create gift" button and the gift will be created and you'll be able to upload an image for the gift. Normal gifts can be given out to other users via Special:GiveGift or by going to the user's profile page and clicking on the "Send a gift" link.
If you need any further help or encounter problems, please don't hesitate to contact me! --Jack Phoenix <staff/> (contact) 13:10, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
OK then. We have an award system called the Golden Homer Award on both Simpsons wikis. How would we go ahead giving points out if a user wins these? Or can't we?
I will get back to you with the names of the new levels once we discuss it. Thanks, ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 07:22, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
I think that it's not possible to give out points if a user wins the Golden Homer Award. It's certainly an interesting idea, though. (Theoretically it would be possible to give out a certain amount of points to the user who has the most points for a week/month, but I haven't gotten that feature working yet.) --Jack Phoenix <staff/> (contact) 14:28, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Pages messing up

Hi. Jedimca0 said when pages move from Wikia, their histories could clutter up if they already exist here. Does that include templates, user pages, mediawiki pages and the main page? — TheHomer (TalkContributions) 18:30, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, yes, it's certainly possible. For example, let's say that the last edit to Wikisimpsons' main page on Wikia was on April 1, 2010. The last edit to the main page over here could've been on November 1, 2010 (for example's sake). The main page over here has two revisions (again, just an example); when the content from the old wiki is imported here, the main page would show the newest version — the November 1 version — even if it were nothing but the default main page.
My suggestion would be to focus on new content that doesn't exist over at the old wiki — by next Wednesday you've already been editing for many days! ;-) --Jack Phoenix <staff/> (contact) 18:49, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, then we'll have to delete all templates that were moved manually from Wikia (a user wanted to help out the move), since they are here and at Wikia. — TheHomer (TalkContributions) 19:14, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Move

Since the new server is up, when will we be moving? Sorry if I sound impatient. Thanks, ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 09:14, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

We're working on Wikisimpsons import at this very moment. --Jack Phoenix <staff/> (contact) 19:22, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Edit count

Hi, for some reason, my edit count hasn't moved over. Is this to do with me being the founder here or something?

Thanks, ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 07:32, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

I've ran initEditCount maintenance script, it should have helped. According to Special:Editcount/Solar Dragon, you have 15,064 total edits. --Jack Phoenix <staff/> (contact) 12:45, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
