Plot

Edna Krabappel tells her class that they will embark on an exciting adventure. Bart thinks that they should play pirates and Edna must jump overboard, but it turns out that she has assigned pen pals to all her students. She tells them that pointless busy work can be an adventure too. The next week, Bart receives his first letter from his pen pal, Herbert J. Walker. When he finds out who his pen pal is, he is embarrassed to learn he lives in Springfield, and he decides not to tell him about his incredible life in Capital City.

Bart becomes mad, because no one insults his life and gets away with it. He starts to write about how pleasant it is to live in Springfield. He also tells him that his family is very close. Bart also writes that his father has an important position with a very powerful company and Bart's name is well known all over town. Bart also writes that after-school activities keep him busy but he still has time for hobbies like nature photography and his coin collection.

Bart concludes the letter by saying that he is going to a meeting with the mayor and the police chief in the school principal's office. Bart also sends a photo of him next to a road sign that says "Capitol City 42 MI. To the stinkiest place on Earth, home of Herbert J. Walker".
