Cultural references

  • Battle Ball is a reference to 'Bakugan Battle Brawlers'. A game played with balls with magnets inside and cards.
  • When explaining the game to Bart, one of the boys says that it makes Digimon look like Pokémon.
  • When Louie turns on the music for Fat Tony, the song At Seventeen by Janis Ian plays.
  • The cop show that Homer watches before changing the channel is an episode of the TV show Starsky and Hutch.
  • Over the freeze-frame at the end of the Starsky and Hutch episode the words appear "A Stephen J. Copshow Production," a parody of Stephen J. Cannell, who produced many cop shows but not Starsky and Hutch.
  • When Johnny Tightlips is holding a gun on Homer and says, "Nobody moves or the doughboy gets popped" he is referring to Poppin' Fresh, the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Trivia

  • Lisa appears in this episode but doesn't have any lines.
  • Sideshow Bob makes a brief cameo appearance at the end of the episode.
