The Meltdown Crisis took place at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant.

History

At the plant, Homer ate jelly donuts, one of which splattered onto a dial nearing the red zone. The plant was on the verge of a meltdown, and Homer was the only person who could stop it. Lacking skills and unable to remember any training—since he had never paid attention to it—he desperately chose a button using eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Miraculously, Homer pressed the button that stopped the meltdown; Springfield was saved, and Homer was honored as a hero.[1]

Smithers later mentioned to Mr. Burns past events involving Homer and his family, including how Homer saved the plant from a meltdown.[2]
