- The title is a reference to the Stephen Sondheim song "Send In the Clowns".
- Homer sings "Jimmy Crack Corn" by the Virginia Minstrels.
- Otto says that he thought that Campaign USA was Lollapalooza.
- Otto made what he thought was a bootleg tape of one of Courtney Love's rambling sound checks. However, it was actually Cokie Roberts doing a think-piece for NPR.
