The inanimate carbon rod is a "worker" at the nuclear power plant that, in the episode Deep Space Homer, got an employee award instead of Homer. Then when Homer went into space, he used an inanimate carbon rod to save himself, and the other people aboard the spaceship. The inanimate carbon rod got the credit instead of Homer, achieving the cover of Time Magazine with the headline "In Rod we Trust".
