- Homer watches Star Trek on TV.
- Hawley Smoot and You is a reference to the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act.
- S.S Mini-Titanic is a reference to the RMS Titanic, a boat which also sank.
Continuity
- This is the second "Professor Frink's Partly Probable Parables" story. The other two stories, both also featured in Bart Simpson, are Quantum Cola and Bart Version 2.0.
