  • The story is a parody of the zombie film Dawn of the Dead, which is set mostly in a shopping mall. The original film appeared in 1978 and the remake in 2004.
  • The Orange Uncle Julio's drink, which Bart discovers can destroy the zombies, is a reference to the fruit beverage chain Orange Julius.
  • Kang and Kodos, who were responsible for the zombie virus, decide to try their Glob Monster next time, a reference to The Blob. The original film appeared in 1958 and the remake in 1988.
    • The aliens say that using the Glob Monster guarantees victory, as the humans won't have a teenage Steve McQueen to save them. In the original Blob film, McQueen stars as teenager Steve Andrews, who witnesses the Blob's arrival and later discovers that the Blob is vulnerable to cold.
