A Koi Pond is a yard feature (often artificial) consisting of rocks, plants, one or more waterfalls, and koi fish that live in the pond. A traditional use of a koi pond is as a peaceful place for meditation and contemplation, enhanced by hearing the flowing water and watching the fish.
Homer buys Marge a koi pond for an annivesary present. Marge's koi pond, however, proves to be anything but peaceful, for several reasons:
- When Marge sits down next to the pond, the first thought that occurs to her is to wonder how much money Homer spent on it.
- A screaming caterpillar (the Screamapillar) takes up residence at the pond, making so much noise that meditation and contemplation become impossible.
- When Homer decides to kill the Screamapillar to be rid of the noise ("Stupid bug! You go squish now!"), an EPA Scientist appears and tells the Simpsons that they can't kill the Screamapillar because it's an endangered species -- and because it has chosen to live at their pond, they are responsible for its care.
- Caring for the Screamapillar proves to be an onerous chore for the Simpsons, as they have to read to it, burp it like a baby, and comfort it back to sleep if it wakes up in the night and starts screaming -- which it does, several times a night.
- Finally, the Simpsons get into trouble with the law when Homer thinks he has accidentally killed the Screamapillar and tries to bury it, and the EPA returns in force and catches him in the act. The Screamapillar is OK, but Homer is arrested on the charges of "attempted insecticide" and "aggravated buggery."
It isn't known whether the Simpsons keep the koi pond after their issues with the Screamapillar and the EPA are resolved.
