They're just the idea of a character, their personality and appearance, being represented in some physical form. I mean, what's the difference between Lenny cosplaying as Fox Mulder and David Duchovny cosplaying as Fox Mulder? Neither of them are ''really'' Fox Mulder, they're only pretending to be him. They're pretending to be the physical representation of his character. I see it as sort of like different actors playing the same role. The actor may be different, but the character is the same.
