- The film The Shawshank Redemption is referenced in the title and parodied throughout the story.
- The poster on Sideshow Bob's cell wall is of Raquel Welch as seen in the 1966 film One Million Years B.C.. Andy DuFresne had the same poster on his wall in The Shawshank Redemption.
- Sideshow Bob's prisoner code is 24601, the first prison code of Jean Valjean in the novel Les Misérables.
- This was also Sideshow Bob's prisoner code in the season 3 episode "Black Widower".
