The Navitron Autodrive System is a device which is able to drive trucks automatically without the need for human input. It was created as a secret scam so that truckers could laze about while the trucks drove themselves. When the scam was exposed by Homer, the system was retired.

History

When Homer was driving Red Barclay's truck to Atlanta to make a delivery, he fell asleep at the wheel. The Navitron Autodrive System was able to direct the truck to a gas station, where Homer learned about the device from other truckers. He was also warned not to tell anyone else, as it was a secret scam that only truckers knew about. Ignoring the threat, he showed off its function to Bart and to a group of people on a tour bus. The other truckers formed a mob against Homer for revealing their secret, with the Navitron refusing to allow Homer to find away around them, ejecting itself from the truck. Homer was able to escape from the mob by spinning the truck, causing it to fly over them. The truckers conceded defeat and decided to start a new scam by creating bootleg Beanie Babies.

Behind the Laughter

The Navitron's line "I'm afraid I can't let you do this, Red. The risk is unacceptable." is a reference to a famous quote from HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
