  • This is one of the few episodes were Mr Burns becomes poor.
  • This is the only episode where all of Springfield starts to recycle.
  • The title is a reference to The Old Man and The Sea.
  • Mr. Burns goes to The Simpsons' house, asking Homer for his daughter. When Homer asks if he means Maggie, Mr. Burns can be heard mumbling "The baby who shot me" while Maggie makes a pistol gesture. This refers back to Who Shot Mr. Burns? (part two).
  • Mr. Burns tells a hippe to "to shine on your crazy diamond" this refers to the song Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd.
