User talk:Dr. Ralph Wiggum

Wikisimpsons - The Simpsons Wiki
Revision as of 18:22, December 30, 2010 by George (talk) (fixing page - incorrect signature)

Discuss stuff for Dr. Ralph Wiggum.

Welcome to my talk page.

Episodes layout

I already posted this on Basel's talk page, but seeing as you're the only other regular contributor here, I'll show you my idea as well. I think we need to decide on a set format for the episode pages. Alot of them have just been copied from Wikipedia, and so aren't written in the in-universe style that this Wiki is supposed to be written in. On Wikipedia we have to write pages from an out-of-universe perspective, so we must include a limited plot summary, production info, key cultural references, and reception all in prose, with no Trivia. However here, that is not the best idea. As such I propose to have a set style guideline for episodes. It's based on what the old Wikipedia episode page format was, and essentially what the Lost episode articles on Lostpedia are like. So: A detailed synopsis - as long as it needs to be. Then a good long Trivia section, perhaps with sub-sections: General notes about the episode, if it effects the overall show, if its events are mentioned again, key production information, key reception information such as awards, animation errors and continuity errors (not "Goofs", that word is horrible). Then a separate Cultural references section, detailing every reference made in the episode. And the same would apply to the movie, but that would obviously have more production points. Thoughts? Admin

I personally think you should be an administer as you have done the most work on here and you could delete all the spam articles straight away and use the many other admin controls to make this wiki better.Sgtcook 20:42, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes but how am I suposed to be an admin?Dr. Ralph Wiggum 22:14, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

An admin or bureIaucrat has to make you one.Sgtcook 16:05, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
I seriously should be one because there are many articles here that should be deleted and many current admins have not been deleted here. Mainly, Penkinedymn and Never talks should be deleted as Penkinedymn is just a made up word and is nonsense while Never talks doesn't really need an article anyway there are more articles that should be deleted that I will get to later. Anyway, I have to find an admin or bureaucrat to talk to first.Dr. Ralph Wiggum 23:11, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
You could overthrow them all Kingcjc 10:04, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Plus you could block/ban spammers for a day, week, month or even forever, like this guy,he seems to have done alot of spamming.68.223.235.11
Just completing Wikisimpsons:Speedy deletions. If you can think of anymore add them, also could you add the {{delete}} to them.thanks
p.s. I don't think you can delete talk pages, you could just delete all the writing on it.Sgtcook 17:54, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Project:Location

I suggest a new projects and dont know where too so since ur the only regular contributor, im gonna post here PROJECT:LOCATION will include details on where , who owns and works there, pictures etc Kingcjc 10:02, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Theve all got images now Kingcjc 12:26, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Hey

Hey Ralph, sorry i wasn't around, i was working on alot of other projects, I going to try to make you an admin. You've been a great help to this wiki. Basel17 23:49, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Promo

I think we should upload promo images on to all episodes that have them.Sgtcook 21:17, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello

Hi, my name is Brian and I'm a new bureaucrat here. I am a regular at the normal English Wikipedia and I had noticed that this site needed another active administrator and offered my services. To my surprise, not only did the Wikia people agree but they also made me a bureaucrat. So, I figured I'd introduce myself and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. -- Brian McClure 06:03, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello again, I noticed from your talk page that you've requested to become an admin. Are you still interested? -- Brian McClure 21:25, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Eh... yes.Dr. Ralph Wiggum 22:05, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Done. Congratulations and use your power well. -- Brian McClure 00:56, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Pages

I found this while searching around:User:Bobo192. It contains a some templates that don't seem to be used and may come in handy.Sgtcook 17:54, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Article deletions

Hi Ralph. I'm a little confused by some of your recent article deletions, particularly List of Mystical Creatures in The Simpsons and redirecting Treehouse of Horror Series to the ToH category. I see that you're an admin now, but deleting pages that the community has worked on is really something that should be discussed with those involved. Can you let me know your thoughts on this? I can be reached on my user talk page. Thanks. —Scott (talk) 03:10, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Just because mystical creatures are characters, there STILL mystical creatures, could say the same about guest stars etc Kingcjc 12:36, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Images

When adding categories to images, i found that there are many repeated or unused images, or loads of the same thing, some not even that relevant like the BBC logo.I think we need to sort through them to leave only those that are used or can be used on a page that needs images.Sgtcook 20:29, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

I think in the future we should avoid taking images from other sites. User either official images or screenshots because no fansite has a claim to them. If you need a program that will let you get screenshots, use VLC Player (just google search for it and you'll find it). -- Brian McClure 16:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
I never knew VLC took screenshots. i use screenhunter Kingcjc 21:19, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
yeah i use screenhunter on ethier online videos or on other sites pics, ok, it's kinda nicking them, but its better then copying.Sgtcook 21:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Referances/sources

Are we meant to have references in articles, some do and some don't.Could you let me know.Sgtcook 22:36, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Copying things from Wikipedia

I would prefer that people not copy things word for word from Wikipedia but for now we need to build the wiki as much as possible, and using things from Wikipedia as a building block is a good start. In the long run, I would like to see this wiki have a lot more original content, because we don't want to just look like Wikipedia. As such, I ask that in the future you try the following:

  1. Try and write an original lead. Wikipedia is done from an out of universe perspective, whereas this in-universe. So, Wikipedia's article about Flanders starts out "Ned Flanders is a fictional character in the American animated series The Simpsons". These articles do not need such introductions, so "Ned Flanders is the Simpsons religious next door neighbor is fine" is how it would start here. In other words, things like "The American animated series The Simpsons" and the like should not be in the leads.
  2. Please try and copy merged/redirected/old things as much as possible. A lot of episode pages here aren't even stubs, but a good way to expand them quickly is to use old versions from pre-March 2007, like this because they contain trivia and cultural references sections, which are of more use here than production sections. As well, it doesn't look like it was copied.
  3. If you copy things, remove all redlinks that will never have pages. Again, having a lot of redlinks screams "word for word Wikipedia copy" but if remove them, the articles look that much better.

So in the future, please try to remember those items. Thanks, Brian McClure 00:07, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Images

I think we should re-upload images to more appropriate names.Sgtcook 17:00, 17 March 2008 (UTC) Started it, i'm deleting all image category's except the main image category as it's easier.fell free to revert it.Sgtcook 20:32, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Characters

I have the list for the poster with me right now if that helps?Sgtcook 19:56, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Shary Bobbins Episode

The episode of Simpsons including the parody of Mary Poppins obviusly has a page on this wiki. But becuase the episode name is so complicated it's hard o find the page. Could we do something about this? Tigernose--Bart & Homer 4.gif 20:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Noiseland Arcade

I just noticed while searching through the buisness category, I found the Noiseland Arcade article. However there were two articles of the same subject. The one named Noiseland Video Arcade, has the proper name and poroper layout (including infobox). However the one named Noise Land Video Arcade (Notice the space between Noise and Land) has more information but a less effective layout. We could make the latter article merge into the first one, so there are multiples. Many Thanks,

Wait a minute!

You can't be the real Ralph! The REAL Ralph can't write!

Introducing Wikia's new look:

Greetings! As many of you have already seen, Wikia is undergoing some major changes to their site layout. As of Wednesday, October 6th, the change will affect both the appearance and how things are done on several wikis, and come October 20th these changes will effect all Wikia sites. These changes are mandatory as this is not simply a new skin option, it’s actually an upgraded version of the core Mediawiki platform itself. Check out "Experience the new Wikia" for a look at some wikis using the new look, FAQ and the Transition guide.

Transitioning to the New Look

We know you’ve put a lot of work into making your wikis look great in Monaco, so we’ve worked on our end to minimize the amount of effort needed for you to move to the new look. Still, there are some things you’ll want to do in order for your wiki to look its best in the new skin. We strongly encourage you to use our Wiki Transition Guide to make this process as smooth and seamless as possible.

Our new theme designer tool will be available to everyone during the first stage of sitewide roll-out on October 6th. This gives you time to experiment with different themes and chat with your community about what looks best before all visitors see your wiki in the new look.

We know that many of you are Wikia experts, and have a ton of experience to share with newer users, who may need more help with the transition. To tap all your knowledge, we will soon be setting up a page where users can request and provide help on the transition.

Timeline

The next step is to slowly but surely move all wikis over to the new skin. While there may be some tweaks, the projected schedule is below so that you know what to expect over the coming weeks.

October 6, 2010
  • The new look will continue to be default for logged-out users on the beta wikis
  • All logged in users will be able to “switch on” the new look for themselves on any wiki they visit.
  • All new wikis created will automatically use the new look.
  • Every wiki in the Wikia Lifestyle Hub will showcase the new look.
October 20, 2010
  • All users will see the new look on every wiki.
  • Logged in users will have the temporary option of viewing and editing wikis in Monaco.
November 3, 2010
  • The option to use Monaco will be removed.

Discontinued features

  • The widget dashboard and all widgets are to be discontinued as they were deemed to be underused.
  • "Report a Problem" links will also be discontinued with the new skin as they were not used as intended.
  • "Email a user" link is gone.
  • Page ratings are gone.

New features

  • New, customizable toolbar that is anchored at the bottom of the screen (Watch the demo video to see how it works.) You will need to learn to use this. (requires JavaScript)
  • New tool for customizing the colour scheme/theme, including default themes.

Other changes

  • The new look uses a fixed width layout, we are not permitted to change, which might influence the layout of articles quite a bit.
  • Wiki logo is replaced with "Wordmark", which admins can customize by adjusting the text & color, or by uploading an image in the theme designer.
  • Site notice is no longer on every page. It is now located in the Community Corner and users will receive a notification bubble each time it is updated.
  • The wiki navigation that is now on the left sidebar, is moving to the top of the screen. It will have 4 drop down menus, with 7 links each. This is substantially less than we currently have. (requires JavaScript)
  • "My Home" becomes "Wiki Activity" and contains a link to recent changes
  • There is a new sidebar area on the right that takes about 1/3 of each page's width, where the recent activity and other "modules" will sit. More "modules" are being developed for it, but there are currently no plans for user-developed modules.
  • Moved the most recent editor’s name from the bottom of the page to the top, added an avatar, and a new mini-history dropdown menu, which contains the link to the full history. (Supposed to make it more obvious to new users that anyone can edit a wiki.) (requires JavaScript)
  • Two of the categories are listed at top as well the full list at the bottom. Apparently the two chosen will be the categories containing the most pages. There is a blacklist to keep out typical maintenance categories, but it is not wiki specific (atm).
  • Edit and talk buttons will be used instead of written links.
  • The name of the user who uploaded a picture will be listed underneath the image caption on articles.
  • The "Terms of Use" are changed so that we will only have very limited options on what we may change on the new layout that is visible to all users.

Terms of Use

In keeping with the goals of the new look, our Terms of Use have been updated as well. Admins will no longer be able to completely remove core features for all users by using custom CSS or JavaScript. This is to protect the universal layout and functionality of every wiki on Wikia and ensure that users have access to all of the features available in the new design. Remember, these new terms only apply to the CSS of the wiki as a whole -- they don’t apply to your personal pages.

To give a few practical examples of what this means: It’s not permitted to remove the right sidebar modules, blogs, and image attribution or add a banner that shifts the entire content area down the page, or alter the fixed width. You can still personalize your wiki with different colors and themes, add large, standout images to the wiki background, create styled templates and tables within the content area. There are plenty of ways to be creative! While these terms will limit what you can do to the overall layout, creativity is still an essential part of Wikia.
