Rumpus Room
Location Information

Appearances

In The Simpson's shorts, the rumpus room is not in a firm location (it's upstairs in "The Closet") and does not look much like the room seen in the series. In "Punching Bag" The room is seen with familiar items like the punching bag toy and picture of Abraham Simpson. In "Bart's Little Fantasy" it seems to be positioned in the proper place as Lisa looks out the window, and there's the appearance of the dart board. Most of the shorts are in agreement that the room has a brown couch and a toy chest.

In The Simpson's series, the rumpus room is seen first in "Three Men and a Comic Book" When marge tells Homer to check on the boys, he is shown in the rumpus room with the tree house outside the window. This shot was reused in "Brother from the Same Planet". In "Stark Raving Dad" The room is seen through the door way as Marge brings laundry into the kitchen. This would suggest that the stairs to the basement lay somewhere in the back hall or rumpus room. It also seems that the window may be on the wrong wall, as curtains can be seen. In the episode "Radio Bart" it is the room where Bart is using his new birthday gift to prop open a window. However, the room, does not have the cupboards around the window. And in "Separate Vacations" the room is seen where Bart is taking Maggie's hand print, however the window is placed on the wrong wall. Perhaps it's a painting of a window, because a window in that wall is never seen from the outside. A different angle on the room is seen in "Lady Bouvier's Lover" where at the top of the show most of the family is in the rumpus room watching Krusty on the T.V. that's there.

Decoration

Things that may be found in the rumpus room include: Purple curtain, small T.V., small plastic kid's table, punching bag toy, tic-tac-toe rug, inflatable Krusty toy, books, toy phone, picture of Grandpa, bean bag chair, football, teddy bear, green chair (most likely the same one from the family room), kid's dart board, Krusty poster, see and say, cup and string phone, stuffed bunny, beach ball, toy tank, clown doll, large top, small book shelf, credenza, rocking horse, guitar, jack in the box, toy blocks, small table, foosball table, basketball hoop, skate board, and the brown couch and toychest from the shorts.

Uncertainties

The room may have two or one windows, a single one may or may not have cupboards around it. The secondary window should be visible from the outside but is not seen in exterior shots. Another episode, "The Day the Violence Died" suggests that the basement entrance is in the rumpus room. As Homer walks by the door and hears the voice of the bum, staying in the basement, ask for change, which he tosses in through the rumpus room door. This is an alternate entrance to the front hall closet which is only some times a basement stairway. This is also a more suitable place for a staircase as it would allow for the basement to be under a majority of the house where as the closet would not (assuming the stairs come down in a corner of the basement as it normally appears). However, no extra doors are ever seen in the rumpus room or back hall, that could be the basement door.
