Ray Patterson was Springfield's sanitation commissioner for an unspecified number of years. He had a good track record, until Homer ran against him, making promises that he could not deliver on. After Homer was fired for encouraging other cities to dump their garbage in the abandoned mine, Patterson was offered his job back but he refused. His only appearance as a character involved in the plot of an episode was the season 9 episode, Trash of the Titans.
