The expedition had only one fatality. [[Kentucky]]-native Sergeant {{W2|Charles Floyd|explorer}} died at age 22 with Lewis at his bedside in the early hours of August 20, 1804 three months into the journey in what is now [[Sioux City]], [[Iowa]]. 

He did not died from ingesting poisonous berries nor warned against so by Sacagawea as modern medical historians have concluded he died from a {{W|ruptured appendix}} and Sergeant Floyd and Sacagawea never met each other as Lewis and Clark first meet Sacagawea on November 4, 1804.
