Cultural references[edit]
- The title and plot are both references to CHAЯLY.
- The Totally Sick, Twisted, F***ed-Up Animation Festival may be modeled after Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation.
- The clay animation watched by Flanders and his kids, The New Gravey and Jobriath, is a parody of Davey and Goliath, a similarly Christian-themed animation. This is one of the few scenes in the show to depart from traditional cel or cel-style animation.
- "Gravey" intends to blow up Planned Parenthood, a pro-choice collection of organizations.
- "Jobriath" was also the stage name of a 1970s glam rock singer.
- The faux old footage of Itchy & Scratchy advertising for Laramie Cigarettes is likely a reference to the first season of The Flintstones, when commercials aired featuring Fred and Barney enjoying Winston Cigarettes.
- Ozmodiar, a parody of The Great Gazoo from The Flintstones, appears twice during this episode, once after Bart says cartoons do not have to make sense, and once more after all the employees are laid off from the plant.
- Homer blames eBay (rapidly gaining fame at the time this episode premiered) for the poor-quality cowbell he purchased.
- Intelligent Homer solves multiple Rubik's Cubes in his spare time.
- The Film Love is Nice, starring Julia Roberts, Richard Gere and Bill Pullman (but not Bill Paxton) is a parody of the other Roberts and Gere films, Runaway Bride and Pretty Woman.
- The line "Is that your final answer?" refers to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
- When the researchers examine the X-ray of Homer's brain, they use a visual enhancement machine similar to the one used by Deckard in Ridley Scott's film Blade Runner.
- The name of the animation firm, Animotion, is probably taken from the band of that name known for their 1985 hit "Obsession".
- Peanuts: The animated dog that dances to Homer's movements while he wears Animotion's motion-capture suit resembles Snoopy.
- While wearing the suit, Homer also does an impression of the "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" scene from The Godfather.
- The Naked Gun: When Homer goes to the men's room (still wearing the motion-capture suit), it is a reference to a scene in the movie when Lt. Frank Drebin leaves a press conference to use the bathroom, unaware that his lapel microphone is still turned on, which results in the sounds of his visit being audible to everyone at the press conference. In Homer's case, the situation is compounded by the motion-capture suit, which means the motions of his bathroom visit are projected onto the display and visible to the audience.
- During the couch gag in the opening credits, Philip Fry from Futurama is dropped onto the sofa, before being sucked away again.
- While mailing his suggestions in the suggestion tube, Homer is humming Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto Brandenburg #3.
- When the Simpson family visit the animation convention, Bob, Larry, and Junior from VeggieTales are shown on one of the booths.
- After Homer becomes smart, he says "library" instead of "li-berry" and "tomorrow" instead of "to-morrie" when he speaks. This is what most little kids say.
- Moe, who says he is an unlicensed surgeon, describes his procedure as "the old Crayola oblongata". This refers to the Medulla Oblongata, the lower half of the brainstem.

Goofs[edit]
- McBain's name at the Totally Sick, Twisted, F***ed-Up Animation Festival is misspelled as McBane.
- When Homer is hooked up to the animation suit, a dog on the screen emulates his moves. As Homer tries to scratch his ear with his foot, he opens his mouth as he moans, but the dog on the screen doesn't.
- In the flashback scene with 6-year-old Homer, there are three crayons on the floor to begin; yellow, red and pink. 6-year-old Homer shoves the pink crayon up his nose first. When he shoves the other two up his nose, they are both pink instead of one being yellow and the other being red.
- As 6-year-old Homer shoves the last two crayons up his nose, two crayons stick out of his ears.
- When Homer looks at a book in the library, the book's text disappears.
- If Homer was the only Animotion stockholder, how did the stock price change? A stock price depends on what somebody pays for it.
- Also, if he is the only stockholder, then he owns the company. It is unlikely the company would go bankrupt without his knowing it.
- When Homer gets kicked out of the movies, the handles on the movie theater door are different sizes when the door closes.
Continuity[edit]
- The crayon lodged within Homer's brain is referenced in the comic Laughter is the Worst Medicine when Dr. Hibbert shows an X-Ray of Homer's head.
- This episode's explanation of Homer's foolishness is contrary to the "Simpson gene" theory established in "Lisa the Simpson".
