• The episode title is a reference to the novel The Red Badge of Courage.
• Homer calls Giuseppe Granfinali "Super Mario", referencing Mario from Mario.
• The boat Abraham Simpson leaves in is called the Yellow Belly, referencing the term "Yellow Bellied Coward".
