• While trying to find a movie that did not belong to the mainstream media, a Sundance organizer reads a submission's logline which described "Paul Giamatti is the world's greatest superspy who only exists in the mind of an overweight, agoraphobic jazz musician played by Martin Lawrence in a fat suit". Giamatti is an American actor who won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead in 2004, while Lawrence is known for his work in mainstream sitcoms and films.
• Lisa's documentary Capturing the Simpsons is a reference to Capturing the Friedmans, a documentary that focuses on the investigation of Arnold and Jesse Friedman for child molestation
• Homer makes fun of some charities, such as Save the Children, Sierra Club, Doctors Without Borders and Greenpeace.
• American actor and director Robert Redford send a letter to Lisa saying that her film was accepted in Sundance. When Homer was about to cut the envelope, he says "Guess what? A scissor runs through it". This is a reference to the film A River Runs Through It, which was directed by Redford.
