The Walking Dead is a multimedia horror/drama franchise created by Robert Kirkman. It tells the stories of groups of survivors in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead franchise began in 2003 with the black-and-white comic book series. The comic book series built a substantial fanbase and won several awards, and in 2010 AMC began airing a television series based on the comic book. The franchise has since spawned diverse other media, including:

  • A companion TV series, Fear the Walking Dead, which began in 2015.
  • Several web series that expand on the stories of characters and situations seen in passing on the TV shows.
  • An aftershow, Talking Dead, which began in 2011 and airs in conjunction with new episodes of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.
  • Numerous books, both original novels and compilations of the comic book.
  • Video games, board games, and tabletop (miniatures-based) games.

The Walking Dead distinguishes itself from other entries in the zombie genre in that it can be considered character-based drama as well as horror. Robert Kirkman has said on several occasions that in the Walking Dead universe, fellow human survivors should be considered just as great a threat as the undead.

The Walking Dead has been referred to several times in various Simpsons media.

When the Simpsons attend the Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con, Homer (literally) runs into an exhibit for a TV show called The Strolling Dead, an obvious reference to The Walking Dead. There are also a number of Strolling Dead cosplayers in attendance; their costumes resemble characters from The Walking Dead TV show.

While Sideshow Bob is in the hospital, Chief Wiggum offers him a copy of the latest issue of The Walking Ned. In addition to being a pun on the franchise, the magazine's title is in the same typeface as the one used for the title on the covers of the comics.

The TV program's title is a reference to The Walking Dead and to the program's holiday setting (a zombie attack on Christmas Village).

ComicBookGuy July 23, 2011 Frank Darabont completely ignored the brilliant “Walking Dead” question I shouted to him at the hotel swimming pool. Diva.
HomerJSimpson November 8, 2011 That show "The Walking Dead" is so dumb. NOT having to walk is the main reason I look forward to death!
HomerJSimpson May 15, 2016 Supernatural, because The Walking Dead reminds me too much of Grampa.
