  • The episode title is a reference to the old folk song "The Old Gray Mare" lyric, "The old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be."
  • The banner "This year a turkey will pardon a President" is a reference to the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation where the President traditionally "pardons" a Thanksgiving turkey.
  • The Springfield Skypark-Line is a reference New York's High Line. Kent Brockman also references it directly.
  • The guy that ends up in the Springfield cactus patch does the Wilhelm Scream.

  • Homer mentions the female Ghostbusters from the Ghostbusters movie.
  • Luigi asks why people think he only wants to serve spaghetti to dogs who want to make out, a reference to Lady and the Tramp. When Marge asks him what he wants to do, he says he wants to carve a little wooden boy and make him come to life, a reference to Pinocchio.
  • When Lindsey Naegle says, "Just tell them [the voters] what they want to hear until you get to 51%. Then, you can govern like a right-wing nut job", she is referring to Donald Trump.
  • Watching Marge's focus group ratings turn from abysmal to positive, Lindsey Naegle likens herself to Kellyanne Conway, who had been Trump's campaign manager.
    • Referring to Kellyanne Conway, one of the focus group remarks it's inspiring that "now a woman can be Joseph Goebbels", who had been Hitler's Minister of Propaganda.
  • Marge sings a parody of "Oh! Susanna" by Stephen Foster when her mayoral campaign is going.
  • Cletus belongs to the demographic "Yokel Objectivists," one of four Ayn Rand references in the episode.
    • He calls Marge "The new John Galt".
    • He holds up a copy of The Fountainhead, with its 3-D lettering.
    • He has a recognizable Ayn Rand scarecrow, whose visage is shown freaking out a crow.
  • The train sheds and their turntable resemble Tidmouth Sheds from Thomas & Friends.
